Graduating from high school or college is a major milestone in life. Class rings are a time-honored tradition that allows graduates to commemorate their academic achievements and display their school pride. When designing class rings, it's important to incorporate elements that reflect your school's unique brand, mascot, and colors.
Here are some ideas to create class rings that showcase your school spirit:
Most schools have an official logo and motto that encapsulate their mission and values. Working these recognizable symbols into the class ring design is an easy way to customize it for your school.
You can feature the logo prominently on the face of the ring or engraved along the sides. The school motto can be engraved inside the band. This allows you to immediately identify where the ring is from.
Integrate your school's colors into the class ring design to showcase your school spirit. The dominant stones and metals used in the ring can reflect the primary school colors. For example, if your school colors are blue and white, you can use blue sapphires and white diamonds as the centerpieces. The metals used, such as the band, bezel, and shank, can also match your colors—a yellow-gold ring for schools with gold and navy colors.
Incorporate imagery of your school mascot into the class ring design. This could include engraving the mascot logo with intricate details on the sides or setting stones in the mascot's colors in the center. If your mascot is an animal like a bulldog or tiger, you can have the class ring designed in the shape of its head. Get creative with using your mascot to make your class ring stand out.
Significant buildings, statues, landmarks, and other symbols from your school can inspire class ring designs that have personal meaning. For example, if your school is known for its clock tower, have that engraved or modeled on the sides. Other options include the university seal, a famous campus statue, the facade of a historic campus building, or the school's athletics stadium.
Consider incorporating elements that pay homage to your major, department, or program of study. For example, science students can opt for class rings with molecular and atomic symbols engraved along the band. Music students may choose treble and bass clef designs. Select symbols, colors, or images relevant to your degree for a personal touch.
The shape of the class ring doesn't have to be traditional. Get creative with designing a ring shape that reflects your mascot or a symbol of your school. For example, a school with a horse mascot can have class rings shaped like a horseshoe. You can also play around with the stones used—picking birthstones, diamonds, or gemstones in your school colors. Make the stones from your school's initials or logo for a customized look.
Many class ring designs allow you to laser engrave personalized text along the inner band or on the sides. Consider engraving important dates from your high school or college journey, like your graduation year, sports championships, or other milestones. You can also engrave names of friends, hometowns, or special school memories. This adds sentimental value.
If your school colors are more muted, consider using bolder secondary or accent school colors on your class ring. Or combine your main school colors with metallic metals for a classy look. You can also rotate between multiple school color combinations—like school color stones on one side and secondary colors on the other side of the ring.
Talk to your graduating class and get input on a class ring design you'll all love. You can also utilize the data of your online school management software to know the preferences of various students. You can submit design ideas to classmates and have them vote on their favorites or provide feedback. Working as a team will result in a class ring that's meaningful to the entire graduating class. Appoint someone artistic to spearhead the design process.
Most schools partner with official class ring designers that offer packages and make the process easy. But for a truly custom design, consider working directly with a jewelry designer or manufacturer that specializes in class rings. They'll work closely with you to translate your high school or college's brand and symbols into a one-of-a-kind class ring.
Engrave a few lines from your school's alma mater song or famous sports cheers inside the band. This adds a unique personal touch. You can format the lyrics to wrap around the inner band or place them where the graduation year is traditionally engraved. This allows you to showcase school pride through immortalized song lyrics.
For a class ring that doubles as a birthday keepsake, incorporate your birthstone colors into the design. The center stone can be your actual birthstone, or side accents and crystals can reflect the color. You can also work birthstone colors into the setting's engraved design or embellishments along the band for subtle customization.
Incorporate numerals with significance into the class ring design, like your graduating class year, sports jersey numbers, or student ID numbers. Certain letters can be meaningful too—like your initials, your significant other's initials, Greek letters from your fraternity/sorority, or the initials of an inspirational figure.
Give your class rings an antique look with vintage details like engraved filigree, distressed metal finishes, and ornate carved designs. Black enamel can add to the vintage aesthetic. For an antique-style stone, consider black onyx, dark red garnet, or traditional black hematite. Add engraved initials or dates in an old-fashioned font.
The sides of class rings offer prime real estate for customized engraved designs. Brainstorm images or patterns reflective of your school then engrave them meticulously into the ring sides. You can also customize the enamel along the edges by choosing school colors. Add pave stones between engraved designs for extra sparkle.
Looking at class ring designs from other high schools and universities can provide inspiration for your own design. While you want to stay true to your school's brand, aesthetic elements like metal finishes, geometric engravings, creative shapes, and stone settings can spark ideas. Put your unique spin on motifs you see in other school rings you admire.
Designing a class ring may seem daunting but doesn't have to be complicated. The key is focusing on what makes your high school or college special and then brainstorming ways to incorporate the colors, symbols, brand elements, achievements, memories, and people that defined your experience.
Keep your classmates and fellow graduates in mind to create a ring design you'll all cherish forever. With an array of customization options for shapes, stones, metals, engravings, and more, you can create statement-class rings that truly reflect your one-of-a-kind school spirit.
Traditional class rings tend to use oval, round, or rectangular-shaped center stones in the school's colors. Popular side designs include the school name, graduation year, school mascot, and symbols related to the student's activities and accomplishments. Yellow or rose gold and sterling silver are common metal choices.
Common inner band engravings include the student's initials and graduation year. Other options are inspirational quotes, song lyrics, names/initials of loved ones, hometown, school motto, and personal memories or achievements.
We have a great article on personalizing rings here.
Ways to customize class rings include using a unique shape that reflects the school mascot, designing personalized side engraving patterns, replacing the center stone with the school logo, incorporating birthstones or diamonds, laser engraving a meaningful date or message, and choosing a creative metal color like black, white or rose gold.
Sterling silver or gold alloys like 10K, 14K or 18K gold are very durable metals for class rings. Platinum and palladium are also extremely strong but more expensive. Higher gold content means a more scratch-resistant ring.
This is a personal preference, but using your birthstone or birthstone colors in your class ring can add special customization. It transforms your class ring into a combination school keepsake and birthday gift. Not everyone's birthstone will match their school colors, so dual birthstone and school-color stones can also be an option.

Class rings are traditionally worn on the right-hand ring finger. This keeps the ring from interfering with any engagement or wedding rings later worn on the left hand. Women sometimes move their class ring to the left ring finger after marriage.

The origin of the mother's ring can be traced back to the early 20th century. The concept gained popularity in the United States during the 1950s.

When it comes to accessorizing jewelry, finding the perfect balance is key. Hence, it's not surprising that many people opt for contact lenses over spectacles for cosmetic and aesthetic purposes. However, you can wear your eyeglasses with your jewelry and still retain — or even enhance — your overall style. The key is to select a suitable metal that complements your eyeglasses and helps tie your look together. In this article, we'll explore various jewelry metals and provide tips on choosing the best ones to match your frames.
The color of your eyeglass frames plays a significant role in determining which metal will complement them best. While black is the most common choice, eyeglasses can come in various colors and patterns, including rose gold for St Michel frames and tortoise for Vinyl. Picking your frames is one way to reflect your personality and unique style — even if it can sometimes be harder to style alongside other elements in your outfit.
Our necklaces at Think Engraved, including the best-selling infinity name necklace, come in silver, gold, and rose gold. As a rule of thumb, you can match our standard silver pieces with frames in cool tones such as silver or blue. Similarly, our accessories in 14k gold or 14k rose gold coatings go well with frames in warm tones such as gold, brown, or even the aforementioned tortoiseshell. These combinations are often the best options for creating a cohesive and complementary look.
Another factor to consider is the finish of your eyeglass frames. Much of our jewelry at Think Engraved is made with sterling silver, as are many pieces of jewelry in general. After all, this metal is very easy to shape. It also looks elegant and shiny, so it will pair perfectly with eyeglass frames with a glossy or polished finish.
If your frames have a modern matte finish, you can complement them with jewelry metals that have a similar textured appearance, such as brushed silver or matte gold. However, a contrasting appearance of matte frames and sterling silver accessories can draw more attention to your accessories, should you wish to make the jewelry the statement piece in your outfit.
By repurposing the diamond or gemstone into a new piece of jewelry, you can also create something unique and personalized that reflects who you are now.

]]>Signet rings have a long and rich history, and their timelessness has helped them withstand the vast and various changes in trends over the centuries. They’ve served many purposes throughout the years from function to fashion.
As noted by Rachel Church, curator, author, and authority on rings of antiquity, signet rings are a good way to showcase good taste and identity. She also states that they’re incredibly versatile, and they can display all sorts of designs such as initials, coats of arms, and even pets!
Keep reading to know more about these beautiful and timeless pieces of jewelry and the best ways to wear them.
Signet rings can be distinguished from other types by their wide and flat center.
Traditionally, these are usually engraved with an identification mark or symbol, such as family crests or royal symbols, which were previously used to
sign and seal important documents, or signaled that the wearer—which was usually a man—was of great importance and influence.
Signet rings have been in fashion ever since humans started wearing jewelry. They were worn during the Old Testament days and were popular in ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian cultures. They have also been worn
among royalty throughout history up to the modern age.
Case in point, the British royal family’s collection of signet rings bear important symbols and represent their social status. It’s most recognizable on King Charles—his ring was given to him when he became the Prince of Wales—but they’ve also been worn by Queen Elizabeth, Princess Diana, and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
They’ve also been used to signify marriage or serve as family heirlooms. Nowadays, signet rings are now a means to showcase personal style. Anyone of any class, gender, and background can wear them. Danielle Thom, curator at the Museum of London, notes that their appeal to all sexes, versatility in designs, and the desire for personalized jewelry has helped signet rings make a comeback.
They’re something that can show others who you are in a timeless and unique fashion. Here are some ways you can style them to make a
statement:
Most kinds of rings usually have traditional placements and ways of being worn. Our post called “On Which Finger Should A Man Wear His Promise Ring?” discusses how men would typically wear their promise ring on their left ring
finger to signify that he was spoken for.
However, wearing them on another finger, on the other hand, or on a chain to be worn around the neck are still suitable options. The same goes for signet rings; they were most often worn on the
pinky finger of the right hand, but now they can be worn all kinds of ways. Here are a few to consider:

When it comes to personalizing leather items such as wallets, there are two main types of ways to do it. One is embossing leather and the other is engraving leather.
For a long lasting design it is better to engrave leather and for texture and dimension it is better to emboss leather.
Both methods have pros and cons and we will cover both of those below.
While you are here, be sure to check out our collection of personalized wallets click here
Embossing is the process of using raised surfaces to create designs or letters.
Engraving is the process of removing material to create a pattern or letters directly into a surface.
Embossing means that the surface of the leather has been manipulated in some way to create different surface heights to create patterns or letters.
The main tool used for this is a stamp or roller with a 3 dimensional shape. When pressed into the pliable leather with pressure, the leather will form to the shape of the stamp or roller.
There are two types of embossing, the first creates a raised pattern by compressing the surrounding leather with a stamp that is hollowed out in a pattern.
Raised Embossing Example
The second is by compressing the leather inward creating a sunken pattern, this can look similar to engraved leather.
Sunk or Reversed Embossing Example
There are both pros and cons when it comes to embossing leather.
Pros of leather embossing:
With embossing you can create a raised textured surface and mimic other materials like alligator.
With stamps or rollers, you can produce large quantities of complex designs quickly.
Cons of leather embossing
Embossed surfaces can wear out more quickly or if not reinforced lose their form.
If a leathers surface is not even, the quality of embossing can be affected.
Treated leather resists embossing or can be difficult to emboss.
It is has become common place with sites like Etsy and Ebay to come across the term personalized or custom ring but what exactly does it mean to have personalization on ring?
The two most common types of personalization on a ring are-
1. Engraving - Adding engraving of a special date, name or saying is one of the most common ways to personalize a ring.
2. Adding special stones like birthstones representing special months that have meaning to you.
Personalizing a ring is simply the act of adding something to it that has a special meaning to you, the person receiving the ring or both.
Everything on our site is personalized in some way and we have hundreds of personalizable rings, so be sure to take a look around for some examples.
This is a really loaded question but I'll do my best to give you an honest answer.
To personalize a band ring in today's world will cost $5 - $10 for a ring that you already own and $15 and up if you buy a ring and have it personalized.
Personalized silver mother's rings will cost you anywhere between $30 - $150 depending on the seller.
Ok, now for the nitty gritty.
To buy a ring and have it personalized will vary a lot in cost depending on the materials of the ring. The truth is there are a lot of sellers (businesses) that charge crazy amounts just because they can and then there are sellers that offer stupid cheap prices because they offer inferior materials.
So for this we are going to give a more in depth list of baseline price ranges.
Personalized men's ring average cost by material.
Personalized men's rings
Stainless steel rings - $15 to $30
Titanium rings - $20 to $40
Tungsten rings - $30 to $100
Gold rings - $80 to $150
Silver mother's rings with lab gems
1-2 stones - $30 to $80
3-4 stones $35 to $90
5-6 stones $45 to $100
7 or more gems $50 to $120
We can not give a solid estimate for women's rings or mother's rings with natural stones since the stone prices themselves can vary dramatically in price.
You will have to do some research on rings with natural stones according to which stones you want to use.

10 Reasons Personalized Jewelry is More Meaningful
]]>
Personalized means to take any item and add name(s), personal photos, popular sayings, or any kind of change that is specific to you or someone else.
People like to personalize many things but especially things that mark a special occasion such as weddings or holidays. For example, wedding rings and promise rings are very popular items to add dates to.
We have a great article on 41 wedding ring engraving ideas here.
That does not mean that personalization has to be a specific date. You can add a photo that has meaning to something like a watch, or night light.
The difference between personalized and custom is personalized means to take an object that already exists and add something to it to make it personal and customized means to make something completely from scratch to specific specifications.
However, there are time where personalized and custom intersect. For instance on a ring, the ring is an existing item but you can get custom engraving.
While the ring itself is not custom, if the engraving is done to your specifications such as font and wording, then it is custom engraving.
There are two ways to personalize an image.
I have have been in the personalized products business for a very long time and in blogging even longer so I can already see it coming. There will be people that message me or comment on this article and will ask "isn't every photo that some takes personalized?"
The answer is no, while every image that someone takes may be personal, it is not personalized. As soon as a photo is taken is is "technically" custom because it is something created from scratch.
Personalization requires an existing photo that is somehow changed to incite an emotional response for someone specific, including yourself.
A personalized gift is any item that you plan to give to someone as a present that has had something personal added like photos, names, sayings, anything to make it more useful or meaningful to a specific person(s).
Most people think of jewelry when they think of personalization and while jewelry is one of the most common items to personalize, there are many other items that can and are personalized.
Personalized gifts often create an emotional response and for this reason they are usually better gifts.
For instance, a mother's ring often creates an emotional attachment or response because the stones represent the months their kids were born.
Think of it this way, if you got your dad or boyfriend a wallet as gift, they will most likely be happy. However, if that very same wallet has I love you or you are the best dad engraved on it, this would create more of a personal attachment or emotion, thus making a more memorable or cherished gift.
Another reason personalized gifts are better is the very idea that you put thought into your gift. We all love gift cards but in a way they say I was in a hurry and didn't put much thought into this gift.
On the other hand, if you take the time to select a gift and then take the time to make it more personal, it shows there was much more thought put into the gift.
People like personalized things because they often trigger an emotional response or represent a meaningful event in someone life.
People like to remember a special day or time or just to feel loved. That is the very essence of personalized, making something personal!
Personalized on Etsy means taking an existing product or item and adding something personal like a photo, names, saying or anything that causes an emotional response or triggers a memory.
It is natural for people to be drawn to anything that causes an emotional response and that is the whole purpose of personalized gift.

Have you been considering transitioning from fossil fuels to solar power? If you want to lower your utility bills, improve your carbon footprint, and move away from the grid, then this is a smart move.
However, in your quest to determine the ideal setup, you might be confused about the exact path to take. Should you install rooftop photovoltaic (PV) panels or should you enter into a community solar program?
Today, we're sharing how each one works and how to determine the right one for you.
As its name implies, a rooftop solar system involves installing physical PV panels on the roof of your property. At this location, it's easiest for the panels to absorb light from the sun.
As these photons interact with the electrons inside the panels, they're converted into electrical power via a built-in inverter. Once the energy passes through the inverter, your home can use it to activate your lights and power all of your devices.
Most homeowners and business owners who decide to install solar power choose to go the rooftop route. They'll hire a professional solar installer, like Blue Raven Solar, to size and scale the system appropriately, and they can begin reaping the benefits of alternative energy as soon as possible.
Yet, what happens if an installer determines that your property isn't a great fit for solar? Certain homes and businesses aren't optimally designed to support the PV panels. Others aren't located in an area that receives an adequate amount of sunlight during the day.
In this case, a community solar program can prove more attractive.
A community solar program centers on a set of PV panels that are located off-site. These panels collectively comprise what's known as a solar farm.
This collection of panels produces a significant amount of energy. In fact, it's enough to power multiple homes and properties at once! If you want to cash in on the solar movement but aren't equipped to do so at home, it can be a valuable alternative.
For some people, the answer is straightforward. Their properties aren't designed to support rooftop panels, so they reach out to local solar farms. For others, the path forward is a little less clear.
Some people have everything they need for a home solar system, but choose to go the community route anyway. Then, there are some who invest in expensive workarounds to make their property accommodate solar despite initial setbacks.
Let's take a look at a few of the most important factors to keep in mind as you make this decision.
It's critical to understand the basic requirements that you must meet in each category. These can make solar power either accessible or inaccessible to you.
To add rooftop panels, you'll need to meet the following criteria:
In terms of roof type, the ideal roof for PV panels is one that isn't shaded and faces south. However, most roofs are pitched and located in a way that makes a rooftop system possible. If you move, you can't take your solar panels with you and you'll need to start all over again with a new installation at your new home.
With community solar, here are the accessibility guidelines to understand:
As you can see, community solar is often more accessible than rooftop panels. With the requirement to own your home removed, this frees up renters to take advantage of the program. Even if you move, you could still remain part of the same program as long as you don't travel too far outside of your local area.
In addition, the flexible credit guidelines enable low-income and mid-income residents to apply. If your credit score is less than stellar, this might be a more viable method to consider.
Speaking of payment, how do you pay for rooftop solar and how does that compare to community plans? With rooftop models, you can either rent your panels or purchase them outright.
If you own your system, then you also own all of the components required to control it, including all wiring and the necessary inverter. Most panels are designed to last at least 25 years, so owning is a smart move if you plan to stay at your property long-term.
If you're unable to pay the full amount for your system upfront, you can also look into solar loans. Many lenders will provide these loans to help you finance your purchase. You'll pay these loans back over time via monthly installments.
If you decide to lease your rooftop system, then a third party will own all of the equipment. For your part, you'll just purchase the power that the panels generate each month. In that way, paying for a leased rooftop system is similar in many regards to paying into a community solar plan.
With community solar, you'll usually enter into a subscription-based setup. Each month, you'll pay for a portion of the solar energy that the panels on the solar farm generate. One of the aspects of community solar that makes it so attractive is that the prices are usually less than what you'd pay through your local utility company.
Note that some community solar providers will allow homeowners or business owners to purchase a portion of their panels outright. If you go this route, then you'll pay for your share either outright or via a solar loan.
Is one of these options better for the environment than the other? Not exactly. With both community and rooftop solar, you're making great strides toward protecting our Earth, improving the air quality, and reducing the number of greenhouse gas emissions in the air.
With rooftop solar, those benefits are isolated to your property. While that's an excellent move, imagine the impact if multiple homes made the switch. This is what you get with community solar.
However, this isn't to say that community solar is always the way to go. For one, there might not be a solar farm in your vicinity. Even if there is, make sure to do your research on it.
Remember that rooftop panels take advantage of empty, unused space on your rooftop. They don't require you to add any more acreage to your property. If a solar farm is set up on land that's otherwise unusable, then the concept is similar.
Otherwise, the land could have a better and more eco-friendly use.
For instance, could it be a wildlife conservation area or a local park? Areas such as former landfills can't be used for anything else, so they make excellent spots for solar farms. Check the history of the farm and understand what the land was used for before the power plant was established.
What can you expect to gain from installing solar panels on your rooftop? How do those benefits differ from community solar panels?
With community solar, it's easy to see the money that's put back in your pocket. You'll usually save around 10% by going this route versus paying your local utility company for electricity.
With rooftop solar, you'll be able to use your panels to offset your reliability on the traditional electric grid. This can snowball into major savings over time, especially if you buy your system initially and aren't paying for it over the years.
In addition, it's important to think about the federal incentives put in place to encourage property owners to go solar. One of those is the Federal Tax Credit for Solar Photovoltaics. In addition, your state government might provide its own set of rebates, and you could even enjoy discounts from your local utility company.
You could even sell a portion of your unused solar energy back to your utility company through a process known as net metering.
In the debate between rooftop and community solar, there is no clear-cut winner. Rather, the right decision depends on where you live, whether you rent or own your home, the pitch of your roof, and the type of payment schedule you prefer.
Regardless of which type you choose, this is a strong step in the right direction. The more we can lower our dependency on fossil fuels, the cleaner and safer our air will be. Both rooftop and community solar systems benefit the environment and residents alike.

]]>One of the most common questions we get asked is about the many conditions stainless steel jewelry can be worn.
One of the most common specific questions is can stainless steel jewelry be worn in the shower.
Stainless steel jewelry can be worn in the shower. Stainless steel jewelry should be made from 316L that can be worn in the shower but there are other stainless steels that you must be aware of because it can not get wet.
Here are the topics we will cover so you can wear your stainless steel jewelry for a lifetime.
Be sure to check out our collection of 316L stainless steel rings here.
We offer free engraving and free shipping.
316L stainless steel jewelry can get wet. True 316L stainless steel will contain an element called Chromium. Chromium will inherently protect steel from water but what you have to be careful of is jewelry advertised as stainless but is not true 316L
With the exploding popularity of stainless steel jewelry, as with all things, some are better than others.
We see it all the time, cheap stainless steel rings that cost $5 - $10 but are not really stainless steel but are rather just plain steel rings.
These rings will get damaged by water and will often turn your finger brown or green. It is extremely important that you buy from a credible ring maker that uses 316L stainless steel.
We have a great article on the pros and cons of stainless steel that you should definitely check out here.
316L stainless steel jewelry is safe to wear in the shower. 316L stainless steel will contain the element chromium. Chromium will form a layer of chromium oxide on stainless steel that will resist rust.
There are other grades of stainless steel that can also be worn in the shower but 316L is surgical steel that resists rust better than almost any other of the 150 grades of stainless steel.
With proper cleaning, the Chromium layer can even repair itself when damaged.
We have a handy article on cleaning your stainless steel jewelry with vinegar here.
Most stainless steel jewelry will not get ruined in water. That is because the element Chromium forms a layer of Chromium Oxide that will protect stainless steel from rust.
However, there are a few exceptions to this rule.
1. There are over 150 recognized grades of stainless steel and some will do a very poor job of protecting stainless steel from water because they have a low amount of Chromium. We always recommend 316L stainless steel.
2. If you damage stainless steel jewelry with a scratch or dent before the Chromium Oxide layer has a chance to repair itself.
We recommend waiting a few days before exposing dented or scratched stainless steel to water, so the protective layer can repair itself. Also, cleaning newly damaged stainless steel with vinegar can speed up that process.
We have a great article that you should check out on why stainless steel rings may rust here.
Stainless steel jewelry can be worn in the pool. However, it is important that stainless steel jewelry is exposed to Chlorine for short time periods and cleaned as soon as possible to remove chlorine residue.
Chlorine is very corrosive to the protective layer on stainless steel, but only with repeated and prolonged exposure. For this reason, if you are in the pool every day, we recommend not wearing stainless steel in the pool.
If you are just taking an occasional dip once or twice a week and clean your jewelry with water and soft clothe to remove the chlorine residue, the protective layer will repair itself.
There are two dangers that can happen with prolonged exposure or exposure that occurs in a small time frame.
1. If you swim every day, even if for a short duration, the protective layer will not have time to recover.
2. If you expose stainless steel for more than a few hours, the protective layer will be completely destroyed resulting in microscopic pits that will allow rust formation.
If you have problems with jewelry turning your finger green, we have an article on how to prevent it here.
You can wear stainless steel in the ocean. Stainless steel has to be exposed for a long time to salt water to be damaged, so if you are going into the ocean a few times a week, you can wear stainless steel in the sea or ocean.
As with Chlorine, it is important to clean and buff off stainless steel jewelry when exposed to salt water.
If you do this after each trip to the beach, you will be fine. Cleaning will remove the salt residue and allow the protective layer on stainless steel to repair itself.
Stainless steel jewelry is perfect for everyday use with proper care. With all the new designs, affordability and durability, stainless steel jewelry will resist damage, look great and save your budget.
Stainless steel is highly durable but out of the 150 different versions, we recommend 316L stainless steel jewelry. This version of stainless steel has the best mix of Chromium for everyday use and protection.
However, it is very important to clean chemical residues from stainless steel so that the protective Chromium Oxide can repair itself between exposures. This is important as this layer is what protects stainless steel from corrosion.
It is also very important, if your stainless steel jewelry is dented or scratched, that you wait a few days before exposing it to chlorine, salt or other chemicals to give the Chromium layer time to repair itself.

One of our fastest-selling products is personalized stainless steel rings.
As you can imagine, we are often asked will stainless jewelry rust?
True stainless steel rings will not rust unless exposed to harsh cleaners or get severely damaged. However, it is extremely rare that either of these things will happen to the point of causing rust.
We will cover several reasons stainless steel may rust but rest assured, unless stainless steel is exposed to certain chemicals or isn't true stainless, odds are you will never see this happen.
Here are all the questions that we will cover.
1. Chemical Exposure
The main reason true 316L stainless may rust is if it is exposed to some hardcore chemicals. 99% of people will never use or expose their jewelry to these chemicals. One reason being is that the chemicals that can cause this are so harsh that people using them must use protective gear.
316L is an alloy of chromium. Chromium is what stops oxidation (rust) and when exposed to certain chemicals can be neutralized. This means it will no longer stop oxidation.
2. Damage
Stainless steel is very tough but if severely damaged, the protective layer against oxidation can be disrupted and lead to oxidation (rust)
3. Not true 316L
It has become more common to see companies selling stainless steel rings that are not true stainless steel. This is why it is important to buy from a reputable company.
Always check feedback and if you see any mention of a ring turning a finger green or rusting, then beware. This is so rare, that if you see that this is happening to someone's customers, they are not selling real stainless steel.
If you are looking for a true 316L stainless steel ring be sure to check out our collection here.

As with any ring, stainless steel rings can fade. Don't worry though, just like any other jewelry a food cleaning will often bring back the shine.
Permanent fading will only be caused if exposed to harsh chemicals or sustaining damage. The build-up or overlap of scratches can give a dull appearance but stainless steel is very tough and unless you have a job that will expose the ring to a lot of damage, you will be ok.
True 316L stainless steel will not turn your finger green.
Since chromium stops oxidation, you will not get that dreaded green ring. Oxidation is what causes the green color so if you are starting to get the Hulk syndrome, your ring is not real stainless steel.
We have a full article that covers this in-depth here.
Stainless steel rings can be worn in the shower.
The power of chromium once again comes to the rescue. Simple shower water will not cause rust and none of the soaps or shampoos that you use on your body are harsh enough to damage your ring.
Stainless steel is a perfect material for rings. Not only is stainless steel affordable but the scratch and rust resistance makes it a perfect material.
The upside to stainless steel is, if it is lost or broken, it is much more affordable to replace. Combine that with its toughness and rust resistance and it is an ideal option.
Stainless steel jewelry can be worn in saltwater but there are a few things to keep in mind.
Saltwater is corrosive and while prolonged exposure will not cause rust, if your ring is coated with gold or coloring, saltwater may wear this coating off with a lot of exposure.
Another thing that can happen is the build-up of salt residue will cause jewelry to fade. This can of course be corrected with a good cleaning.
We have a great article on cleaning stainless steel jewelry with vinegar here.
Stainless steel jewelry can be worn every day. Stainless steel is scratch-resistant, rust-resistant, and light-weight, making it perfect for every day use.
The ability of stainless steel to resist rust means you can wear stainless steel rings in just about any weather.
The strength and scratch resistance makes stainless steel ideal for just about any work environment.
Stainless steel is heavier than Titanium but lighter than Tungsten. This means it is pretty comfortable to wear every day.
For more pros and cons of stainless steel check out our article here.
We should have covered just about all of your questions about stainless steel rings, but if we missed something, feel free to use the comments section below.
Stainless steel is lightweight, affordable, durable, and perfect for most work environments. The stigmas of stainless steel is UN-warranted as it is actually one of the best materials for rings.
With today's designs, you can find a ring that is sure to fit your style.

What does this jewelry stamp mean? This is one of the most common questions we get through Quora. You can fill in the blank as to what the stamp is. We will list them in a what is___ format, just as if we were answering a message. We have invested many hours of research in order to bring you this guide on the meaning of different jewelry stamps. We will start out with the most common stamps that we see and work our way through some more uncommon stamps on jewelry.
So what do jewelry stamps mean?
These stamps stand for sterling silver. This means the piece of jewelry should be 92.5% pure silver mixed with another metal, usually copper. Silver on its own is very soft and needs another metal added to make solid jewelry.
A common question that I get is “ I have a gold ring stamped 925, what does that mean?” Much to my dismay I have had a few people get very angry with my answer. The answer is this means that the base metal is sterling silver with gold plating. There is nothing wrong with this if you are wanting some jewelry made of high-quality metals at an affordable price. The issue will normally come down to was the person selling or gifting this item to you honest? I suspect that the anger stems from the answer being no.
Other common questions are what does 925___ mean. For example, what does 925nc mean or what does 14k KC mean. This is simply the symbol for 92.5 sterling silver (925) and the maker’s mark (nc). The 14k KC means simply 14k gold (14k) and the makers mark (KC). There have been thousands of maker’s marks, so if you need to know who the maker is, it will take some research to discover this.
I’ve also seen questions like what does 14k GP mean? This means 14k gold plated, but this does not give any information as to what the base metal is.
Gold is the same as silver in that it is much too soft on its own. There are several variations of gold mixes and these are what they actually stand for.
If you would like to check out some of our 925 mother's rings or personalized rings try these two links.
41.6% or 10 parts per 24 pure gold mixed with other metals, usually nickel, copper, zinc or silver.
58.3% or 14 parts per 24 pure gold mixed with silver, copper-zinc and nickel. These may vary slightly.
75% or 18 parts per 24 pure gold mixed with elements such as silver, copper, and nickel.
Some countries use c instead of k for gold. So this still means 75% gold.
100% or 24 parts per 24 pure gold. This means no additives. While this is pure gold it is also very soft and tends to bend and scratch rather easily. This is one of the reasons it is rare to find jewelry that is pure gold.
As a side note, palladium is added to gold to make white gold. Also, Karat is usually stamped k, K, or KT and is different from Carat. Carat is for measuring the weight of gems and not metals.
Another common stamp on gold (especially from England) are essay marks. These marks are not made by the manufacturer but by the essay’s office to certify the purity. Each number stands for the percentage of purity of gold, platinum, and silver.
For gold, the stamps are 375, 585, 750, 916, 990 and 999
For silver, the stamps are 800,925,958 and 999
For platinum, the stamps are 850, 900, 950 and 999
Please refer to the photo to see what the stamps look like as well as the essay’s office stamp.
That covers the most common stamps on gold jewelry. There may be some other variations or even country marks such as Italy alongside these markings.
825 means 82.5% pure gold or 825 part per 1000 gold. This is also known as 19K gold.
90% platinum or 900 parts per 100. Usually mixed with other platinum metal group alloys such as Ruthenium, rhodium, or palladium.
950 platinum will simply carry 950 in place of the 900 and is 950 parts per 1000 pure platinum.
Here is a great article about the above stamps here.
This is basically the maker’s mark for Pandora Jewelry. This is stamped in almost all Pandora jewelry except for maybe a few smaller pieces.
Platnaire is an alloy consisting of 92.5% silver, 5% platinum and 2.5% other elements but is nickel-free, making it hypoallergenic.
FTH is the trademarked maker's mark for M. Fabrikant & Sons.
A jewelry maker out of New York.
This means that the ring is Gold Electroplated. HE means heavy gold electroplated. Here is a blog with more in-depth information on this here.
Gp is simply gold plated.
This means that the jewelry actually has a layer of gold bonded to the base metal. This is more common on items such as watches.
IP means Ion Plating and is one of the most solid plating techniques called physical vapor deposition. In the past, this was often used on tools and blades but is becoming more common on quality plated jewelry.
The JP stands for Pacific Jewelry manufacturing Co. and the 88 is for the number of facets the diamond has.
This is the mark for a stainless steel piece. Stainless steel is one of the more affordable options for people who tend to turn green as it is usually hypo-allergenic.
WGD is kind of like karat meaning weighted gold. For example, 18 karat weighted gold or 18k.
PD means Palladium. This is a member of the platinum family of alloys.
This stands for Karat Plumb and is a certification that it is at least the karat marked or better. For instance, 14kp means it is at the very least 14k or higher.
I will leave you with this one last answer to a question we are often asked, as I think it is very important to address this.
If you still can not find what your stamp means, then it is probably a makers mark.
ABF on jewelry commonly means it has an antique bronze, antique copper or antique brass finish over some other type of metal.
Take this tungsten ring for example. This is one of our new line of Tungsten rings that we are launching soon. The TE with a circle is our logo followed by U.S.A. Effectively stating TE U.S.A. or ThinkEngraved U.S.A.
The simple answer is yes. There are and always be scammers out there trying to rip people off. It has become more common for jewelry coming from China and other regions to have stamps that are not correct in order to pass of jewelry as real gold or even sterling silver. Always be aware of who you are buying from and make sure they have been around a while and have great ratings and / or reviews.
Another thing to watch for is mark manipulation. I have heard many stories on this. One that stands out in my mind is a ring marked 14kg. This ring originally was marked 14kgp meaning 14k gold plated but the p was polished out but there is no 14kg.
How to tell if sterling silver is authentic
Is it safe to clean jewelry with alcohol and how do I do it?
]]>While there are many ways to clean your stainless-steel jewelry, one of the most cost-effective options is to use simple, everyday household products like vinegar.
To clean stainless steel jewelry with vinegar, one of the quickest and most simple methods is to dampen a soft, nonabrasive cloth in a mixture of one cup of vinegar and one cup of water and gently rub your jewelry with the cloth.
Using vinegar to clean jewelry has many benefits including being a disinfectant, gentle, common and inexpensive.
Vinegar is a disinfectant and can kill any germs or bacteria that may be on your jewelry from doing everyday tasks.
Vinegar is great as a gentle all-purpose jewelry cleaner for spot cleaning with a cloth or a deeper soak to clean.
White vinegar is not a harsh chemical and is something most people usually have in their pantry.
The price of white vinegar is great too. It can be bought in large quantities and is inexpensive making it a great alternative to chemical jewelry cleaners.
To clean your stainless-steel jewelry with vinegar and a soft cloth you will need vinegar, water, a container, a soft cloth and a spray bottle (optional)
Baking soda and vinegar will create a reaction, so be careful or you could have more fun than intended. This method is great for any heavy grime or dirt that needs removed. This mixture creates a reaction that can gently dissolve dirt and other unwanted particles.
To clean your jewelry with baking soda and vinegar you will need baking soda, vinegar, water, two bowls, a soft bristled toothbrush, and a soft cloth.
One final method of cleaning jewelry will combine the use of a baking soda paste and a vinegar dip resulting in a bubbly reaction that will clean your jewelry completely with natural cleaners and a natural chemical reaction.
This is a great way to clean chains, bracelets and other pieces of jewelry with several prongs or spaces to clean between. The chemical reaction from dropping the baking soda covered jewelry into the vinegar will force dirt from the piece.
To clean your jewelry with a baking soda paste and a vinegar bath you will need baking soda, vinegar, water, three bowls, a soft bristled brush and a soft cloth.
Stainless steel is one of the best metals for jewelry. It keeps its shine over time and does not tend to bend or break as easily as softer metals such as gold.
Stainless steel jewelry is also incredibly easy to do upkeep on and you do not need an expensive chemical cleaner or ultrasonic machine to get it clean.
Besides being inexpensive, vinegar has an added benefit of being an effective disinfectant.
This is especially important if you wear rings and bracelets as they are exposed to touching and being touched by different hands and surfaces throughout your busy day.
Cleaning stainless-steel jewelry is as easy as going to your kitchen pantry and finding items you probably already have.
Even if you do not have them, getting them is simple and inexpensive, so put a big bottle of white vinegar on your next shopping list and wear your stainless-steel jewelry with pride.

]]>Promise rings have been a part of the jewelry fashion industry since the Middle Ages. Historically these rings have been given by men to women, but as times change from a focus on marriage to the realization of life partners, promise rings have become much more popular, especially for men.
So, where does a man wear his promise ring?
Tradition may say a man should wear a promise ring on his left ring (or fourth) finger but wearing it on his right hand or even on a chain around his neck is popular as well.
In the United States in particular, promise rings have historically been given to women and signify a promise of marriage, however, that is no longer all a promise ring means.
A promise ring can symbolize the lifelong commitment to a partner in a couple who does not have the desire to take that walk down the traditional aisle or who does not want the government involved in their relationship. Therefore, more men are turning to promise rings and they want to know where those rings should be worn.
Is it a rule? No, but wearing a promise ring on the left ring finger is the long-time tradition.
The tradition of wearing a ring of love on the left ring finger actually dates to Ancient Roman times. Ancient Romans believed there was a vein, the Vena Amoris, or the vein of love, which ran from the left ring finger to the heart.
While this vein does not actually exist, the idea has held up through the centuries because it is such a romantic notion. I mean, of course we want to wear the ring that symbolizes our love on the finger that has a vein going directly to our heart.
A cultural benefit of a man wearing his promise ring on the left ring finger is the association of being spoken for. In the United States, any ring worn on the left finger is seen as a symbol of lifelong commitment showing others you are not romantically available.
Traditionally, this would still be the finger that a man wears a promise ring on, but today, not everyone wants to abide by centuries old tradition.
Of course! According to the Gemological Institute of America, while the traditional finger for a promise ring is the fourth finger of the left hand, the third finger, or middle finger is also a suitable alternative.
The wearer of the ring should find comfort in whatever finger he chooses to wear it on.
According to Love To Know, the middle finger is not actually associated with any specific ideas, but the middle finger is the longest finger and can “symbolize power and responsibility” (https://jewelry.lovetoknow.com/What_Is_the_Meaning_of_Each_Finger_for_Rings).
A man choosing to wear his promise ring on the middle finger can show that he wants to be responsible for his long term commitment to someone, or even that he simply wants to show off his promise ring on his most prominent finger.
Of course, a man can always choose to wear the promise ring on his right finger foregoing the left hand altogether.
Some cultures actually do use the right hand to display their rings of promise and commitment already so there is no wrong hand for a man to wear a promise ring on.
Again, an added benefit to a man wearing a ring on either ring finger would be the call to others that he is unavailable. If this aspect of wearing a ring is important to the guy or his partner, then the ring finger may be the way to go.
There are many careers that would put a man’s hand in physical danger by wearing a ring, so what should you do in that scenario? A great option for the man who works with his hands is to have a chain around his neck where he can display his promise ring.
Wearing a ring on a chain is actually becoming more popular for men today. This is a safe way to display the promise ring while keeping those hard-working hands safe so there are still fingers to even wear rings on!
This seems like the overall question to really be answered. Where a promise ring is worn is up to the wearer and the person who gave it to him.
There are some men who will decide that the symbolism of what each finger can represent is important to them. They will want to display the promise ring on the finger that means the most to them and their relationship.
There are also those who want to be traditional and culturally relevant keeping the promise ring on the left finger to signify they are spoken for.
While wearing it on this finger is a cultural sign of unavailability in our country, this is not a concrete rule by any means.
Men can wear their promise ring on the ring finger, or their middle finger. They may be more comfortable with a ring on their middle finger for various reasons.
There is even still the option to wear the ring on the right hand. If a man is left-handed, this may be the most comfortable option depending on the size of the ring.
Wearing a promise ring on a chain around his neck is a great option for the guy who works with his hands. There are many jobs where wearing a ring on any finger could cause injury and this is a great option for those who hold that kind of job.
Overall, it is not where the ring is worn that shows significance, it is that the ring is worn. So, guys, wear the ring. Show your significant other that you really appreciate the thought and care they put into choosing the perfect ring for you and wear it with pride.
The placement of a man’s promise ring really does not matter in the grand scheme of life. Wear it wherever you want, just wear it. No matter where you wear it, the world will see you with your ring and know you are loved.

Ring engravings are great, but remember, they are pretty permanent! This means you want to be happy with your choice before it is etched into stone (or metal in this case). Here are a few tips.
As long as you choose something that comes from the heart, your engraving is sure to be greatly appreciated by the wearer of the ring. It will make the jewelry so much more special and surely your son will cherish it for years to come.
Just remember to keep it timeless, short and sweet, and sentimental. Double-check that it is correct before you send it off to be engraved and you will end up with a piece of jewelry that is entirely unique.
An engraving is an inscription that is carved, or engraved, into the metal of your ring. Usually, an engraving consists of text but it can also be an image or a symbol. Common engravings include dates, names, quotes, phrases, and religious verses.
Engravings can be done in one of two ways, either hand-engraved or engraved by a machine. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Hand engraving has a traditional and old-world feel to it. A jeweler uses a tool called a graver. This tool resembles a chisel, the type of instrument used to carve out stone or wood. There are various sizes and designs of gravers each lending a unique style and quality to the engraving.
The engraver will choose the best graver for the job and then begin carving into your metal band to add the inscription. This process can be tedious and costly. Some metals may cost more as they are more difficult to engrave.
Soft metals are the easiest to engrave. Gold and sterling silver are common soft metals that are effortless to engrave. However, tough and durable metals, like tungsten and platinum, can also be engraved. Sometimes tougher metals are unable to be engraved by hand.
A hand engraving is full of character and will usually last just as long as a machine engraving. Machine engravings are, unsurprisingly, engraved by a machine. Machine engravings use a CAD, or computer-aided design, program.
These inscriptions are carved out by powered gravers controlled by a machine that many jewelers may have access to. All the jeweler has to do is type the engraving into the computer program, pop in the piece of jewelry, and the machine will automatically set to work.
Typically, these types of engravings cost less. However, they may not be as unique. Additionally, some machines can only allow for block lettering or certain styles of engravings since they burrow into the metal as specified by the computer program.
Regardless of which engraving type you choose, adding a heartfelt message to a ring will make it much more special.
As mentioned, engraving a ring makes it special! These objects become much more cherished when there is a unique message included in them. It makes it much more than a ring purchased from a jeweler, it makes it yours.
Additionally, dates, phrases, sayings, and more are great ways to remember a special moment. Commemorate a person or keep them close. Engravings add a special touch.

Stainless steel is one of the most recognizable metals. Lots of items claim to be stainless steel from kitchen appliances to jewelry. While perusing jewelry you have likely noticed stainless steel rings.
You may have wondered, are stainless steel rings good?
Stainless Steel rings are good for the price. They are affordable, durable and corrosion resistant. Also, stainless steel is easier to design and is less prone to dents than gold.

Do Sterling Silver or Stainless Steel Rings Turn Your Finger Green?
In this article, we will cover the pros and cons of a stainless steel ring as well as take a look at their composition, price range, and competitors.
Stainless steel is an alloy. That means it is not a pure metal but a metal mixed with other components. Mixing metal with other materials usually provides the metal with additional benefits.
Stainless can refer to a bunch of different steel types. But generally, stainless steel is iron and carbon plus chromium and nickel. Alloying the iron and carbon with chromium and nickel help to make it corrosion and rust-resistant. Hence the name “stainless”.
Iron readily rusts but chromium provides a protective layer to the metal. Chromium can be added in varying amounts. Usually anywhere from 10% to 30% of the alloy is chromium. This results in different grades of stainless steel.
Sometimes molybdenum, titanium, and/or niobium can be added in. These materials also change the grade or type of stainless steel. Common stainless steel jewelry markings include the following:
304: This is one of the most common alloys of stainless steel and indicates the addition of chromium and nickel to the metal.
316L: Chromium and nickel, plus molybdenum. This is the kind used in surgical instruments and is generally considered hypoallergenic.
Both of these types of stainless steels are very strong. They are also able to withstand high temperatures and are non-magnetic. Excellent for everything from construction to jewelry.
Be sure to check out our selection of engraved stainless steel rings here.
When you hear stainless steel you probably think silver. And this would be accurate. Most stainless steel jewelry is silver or soft greyish-white in color.
However, it can be plated. There are a number of colors to choose from if you are looking to plate your stainless steel ring. This will drastically change its appearance.
Stainless steel, like other rings, can either be polished to a high shine or left matte. Whether you choose to leave your ring textured or shine it until its lustrous will likely not change the characteristics of the metal.
As mentioned, stainless steel is extremely strong. After all, it is used in construction material due to its high iron content. Your industrial strength ring will definitely stand up to regular wear.
The addition of chromium makes it resistant to corrosion. Leaving you with a durable and anti-fading or rusting item of jewelry. It won’t fade, rust, corrode, scratch, tarnish or oxidize.
Other than being very strong and durable it is also resistant to heat, is non-magnetic, and some forms are hypoallergenic. All great qualities for a ring.
Stainless steel can be a good choice for a ring because of its durable qualities. If you are hard on your jewelry, lead an active lifestyle, or have a job that requires you to use your hands a lot, stainless steel can be a great choice because of its strength. It can hold up to daily use and resist most signs of aging.
Though very strong it is not heavy. This makes it light and comfortable to wear. Unlike bulkier and heavier rings, it won’t weigh your finger.
For those concerned with wearing jewelry at work, stainless steel may be a good choice. It is a poor conductor of electricity. You won’t have to be concerned about getting a shock via your ring!
Additionally, it can be removed using common tools. This means should it need to be taken off of your finger in an emergency situation, it can be cut off rather easily.
It also is preferable because of its appearance. Many individuals like the soft gray-white or silver color. It resembles many other valuable metals like platinum and can be very alluring when worn as a ring.
Though it is strong it can be molded into a variety of designs and shapes when it comes to jewelry. It might take some force to mold it into your design of choice, but once achieved it will likely last a lifetime.
Stainless steel may also be hypoallergenic. This is wonderful news for those with allergies. Just remember, some plated versions may not be hypoallergenic.
Stainless steel is 100% recyclable, another advantage for those seeking a sustainable option. It is also one of the most eco-friendly metals to produce.
A final advantage is that it is low maintenance. Not only will your ring withstand a lifetime of use but it will also look great doing so with very little care.
They can be cleaned with soap and water. The absence of a rhodium plating means you won’t have to have them re-plated every few years.
There are several reasons why the characteristics of stainless steel make it a strong contender for a ring choice.
Plain stainless steel rings can cost as little as $15, finished or comfort stainless steel bands will run into the $20-$25 range. If you have a stainless steel ring engraved, you can expect to pay $10-$15 more for engraving.
With so many great attributes you may be wondering “what will it cost me?”. Stainless steel is surprisingly affordable. Many individuals like that it looks like much more expensive metals but doesn’t have the matching price tag.
It sounds too good to be true! However, stainless steel does have a few minor disadvantages. Though it is pretty good at resisting scratches, it can dent. If you apply strong force, drop a heavy object on it, or pinch it a dent may result.
Stainless steel isn’t very malleable. While this is a good thing, its rigidity makes it very difficult to get complicated and detailed designs. Unlike gold, you may not be able to achieve the complexity of the design that you are hoping for.
Finally, stainless steel isn’t always allergy-friendly. It is alloyed with nickel and therefore some people may have an allergic reaction to this material.
Other considerations include the difficulty of resizing and its availability. Most jewelers might not have the tools to resize stainless steel because it is so strong and rigid. Additionally, many physical jewelers don’t carry a wide variety of stainless steel rings.
In most cases, you will need to purchase it online, which can limit your choices. However, as long as you do your research and choose the appropriate size, these factors shouldn’t be an issue.
Stainless steel rings can hold gemstones. The ring's rigidity and strength mean it can securely hold a variety of stones. However, many jewelers don’t typically set extremely valuable stones, like diamonds, in stainless steel rings.
This is because stainless steel itself is not very valuable. Therefore, it doesn’t make sense to set such a pricey gem within such a low-cost metal. Although, some people may choose to save on the ring metal in order to afford a more valuable stone.
Other than gems and stones, stainless steel rings can also have engravings or designs. The bigger your ring the more designs and details you can put on it. And, because stainless steel is relatively inexpensive, you can have quite a big ring without paying an exorbitant amount of money.
Stainless steel doesn’t require a great deal of care and cleaning. It can be cleaned with soap, warm water, and a soft cloth. It can be left to air dry or dried off with a towel.
Stainless steel benefits from occasional polishing though it shouldn’t need regular polishing. This can be done at a jeweler or at home with a purchased specialized polishing cloth.
Some individuals may use toothpaste to polish their stainless steel. This is because it is abrasive. If you choose to use toothpaste go slowly and lightly and be sure to wash your ring well afterward.
Stainless steel isn’t prone to scratching but it is still a good idea to be conscious of your ring. Try not to expose it to repeated banging or friction. Additionally, when storing it should be stored away from other metals in its own area. This will reduce scratching and corrosion.
Finally, avoid chlorine. Though stainless steel is corrosion resistant, it doesn’t play well with chlorine. If you plan to go swimming it is best to remove your jewelry before entering the pool.
If you are looking for an attractive and durable ring that won’t break the bank, stainless steel is a great choice! It won’t cost you much in terms of money or time and will stay looking lustrous for years to come.
When you buy jewelry, you want to invest your money in a piece that will last a lifetime if properly taken care of.
Choosing jewelry made of a strong material will ensure that your ring, necklace, etc. will endure years of wear. This choice is especially important if you work with your hands or don’t have the time to take special care of delicate metals.
Today, we will be comparing two popular metals used in jewelry – stainless steel and sterling silver – in order to determine which is ultimately the better option for wearers who need something extra durable.
Is stainless steel stronger than sterling silver?
Stainless steel is harder than sterling silver and this in turns means that overall stainless steel is stronger than sterling silver is.
Stainless steel has become a more popular metal over the years to be used in jewelry, especially in rings. It combines many of the best properties of other metals on the market and results in jewelry that is easy to care for and highly durable.
Basic Properties of Stainless Steel
There are several types of jewelry-grade stainless steel, but they all share the same basic properties that contribute to the product’s overall strength.
Stainless steel is highly durable, meaning that it won’t warp under pressure or break as easily as other metals do. On the Mohs Scale of Hardness, this metal rates between a 5-6, making it more durable than iron, platinum, and gold among others.
One thing that makes stainless steel jewelry stronger overall than those made of other metals is its resistance to corrosion. Harsh chemicals and even plain water may corrode some metals over time, eating away at the shiny exterior and weakening it if not regularly cleaned and cared for.
This metal’s anti-corrosion properties help to make it last longer and stay stronger.
Pros and Cons of Stainless SteelWhile stainless steel has many strengths, it is not immune to weaknesses that may make the jewelry less desirable, depending on the wearer’s needs. Strength isn’t solely about durability and hardness or even corrosion resistance, so it’s essential to compare its strengths and weaknesses together.
Cons
Sterling silver has consistently been a favorite among jewelry wearers for centuries. This metal is elegant, shiny, and easy to shape into rings, bracelets, necklace chains and charms, etc. As is true of any other metal, it has its own strengths and weaknesses.
Basic Properties of Sterling Silver
Sterling silver has many desirable properties, but some can be considered drawbacks in terms of strength and overall durability. Both the benefits and detriments are significant and may greatly impact your decision to buy the jewelry.
Sterling silver is far more durable than its pure silver counterpart. This is because it is actually an alloy of silver, nickel, and other trace metals. The trace metals increase its strength and durability against direct pressure or heat. On the Mohs Scale of Hardness, sterling silver rates a 2.5. It’s as strong as 24k yellow gold.
Jewelry made of sterling silver is fortunately not brittle, making up for its low overall strength and durability. This means that the metal can warp, but can also be fixed as it doesn’t snap and break easily. It can also be resized.
Pros and Cons of Sterling SilverSterling silver is, in some respects, weaker than many other metals, including stainless steel. However, this metal has its strengths that keep jewelry wearers everywhere coming back for more.
Pros
Cons
Measuring which metal of these two is ultimately stronger comes down to how well they fare in three categories: hardness, durability/ductility, and resistance to corrosion.
The hardness of a metal generally determines how well it endures or resists scratching, denting, and warping. The metal that is the hardest is also typically the strongest, unless it is especially brittle.
On the Mohs Scale of Hardness, stainless steel beats sterling silver by several points. The silver alloy is as easy to damage as gold, the softest jewelry material of them all.
In terms of durability and ductility, stainless steel and sterling silver draw even.
Steel is more durable than sterling silver, resisting high pressure and scratching. The metal is much more difficult to break or otherwise irreparably damage.
However, sterling silver is more ductile. Because it bends more easily, it may last a person longer through multiple resizings and repairs.
Stainless steel’s main appeal is its resistance to corrosion and tarnishing. The elements and certain harsh chemicals (i.e. household cleaners, chlorine) won’t cause it to break down quickly and ruin. Sterling silver, on the other hand, is easy to corrode and tarnish. Unless it is taken care of properly, sterling silver jewelry can’t endure regular wear through the years.
When you consider the three categories that make a metal “strong” in the eyes of jewelers and jewelry wearers, stainless steel is a clear winner against sterling silver. It is the perfect metal for manual laborers, low-maintenance people, and those who would like to wear their jewelry for all occasions.
However, the definition of strength is subjective. Some may still prefer sterling silver if they don’t wear jewelry very often or are meticulous in jewelry maintenance.
Those who work in an office can expect their sterling silver jewelry to last quite a while just fine, as these pieces won’t have to withstand much pressure or potential warping/denting everyday.
In summary, the strongest metal objectively is stainless steel. Subjectively, the decision hinges entirely on the needs and desires of the wearer.
No matter which metal you prefer or need to fit your lifestyle, there is a perfect piece out there waiting to beautifully decorate the finger, neck, or arm of yourself or someone you love. You can find a wide selection of beautiful and affordable stainless steel and sterling silver jewelry at Think Engraved.
What Is The Best Wedding Ring For A Man?
]]>Your wedding ring is a lasting piece of jewelry that you and others will see daily. Therefore, you want it to be attractive, durable, and comfortable. There are many choices out there, this is clear when browsing online or in-store.
So, what is the best wedding ring for a man? That depends. Your style, lifestyle, and budget will all play a role in choosing your wedding band. Additionally, your partner's ring may influence your choice too.
The best wedding ring for a man is one that uses materials made to fit his activities, and fits his style. A tungsten wedding ring would be better for a man that works in a job field that requires him to use his hands while a gold band is great for men that do not work with their hands as much.
This article that we wrote can help you decide on the best wedding ring material for a man.
What is the Most Scratch Resistant Metal for Rings?
There is a lot to consider when making such an important decision! This guide will cover:
Hopefully, by the end, you will be ready to say “I do” to your perfect wedding ring.
Types of Metals
Traditional, classic, and most widely used when it comes to wedding bands, yellow gold is a solid choice. However, don’t expect your band to be one-hundred percent gold, as these would be quite soft and damage easily. There are other metals added to the gold to increase its stability; the metal is then known as an alloy.
The composition and quality of the gold are referred to in karats (we are talking with a “K”, carats with a “C” refers to diamond purity). One karat is equal to 1/24, as gold is measured in parts of 24.
Your ring could be 14kt gold, 18kt gold, and so on. An 18kt gold ring is only 75% gold, or 18/24’s, a 24kt gold ring is considered “pure gold” even though we now know it isn’t completely gold.
Yellow gold is still thought of as somewhat rare, in turn, gold wedding bands are considered valuable. Yellow gold did see a decrease in popularity in the late 20th century for being “old-fashioned”, but today this color of the ring is considered classic and timeless.
Rose Gold is a warmer take on the standard yellow gold wedding band. Gold is mixed with copper and occasionally small amounts of silver.
This makes a pleasant champagne-colored ring. Rose gold, unlike yellow gold, has seen an increase in popularity as of late. This trendy metal is referred to as red gold or pink gold.
Originally developed in Russia around the 1800s, jewelry made of rose gold was most popular in the 1920s.
After that, it fell out of favor until modern times. Unsurprisingly, the amount of copper added to the gold determines the hue of the ring. The karat value is still determined by the amount of pure gold in the band.
Unlike yellow gold, rose gold is not considered a naturally occurring rare metal. The copper in the rose gold tends to help it to be more durable than a solid yellow gold band.
As a guy, don’t be turned off by the color. It is considered a trendy option for men and works very well in a his and hers set.
When you mix “white” metals such as nickel or silver and a rhodium plating, you get “white gold”. Side note, nickel is a common allergy, so check the composition of your ring carefully. The rhodium plating finish gives the ring a look similar to platinum.
White gold can be a bit more affordable than platinum. While it may look like platinum, it lacks its extreme durability.
Without the plating, the finish of the ring is a yellowish-white hue. To block this yellow patina from shining through the plating requires maintenance.
It usually has to be refinished or dipped anywhere from every six months to every few years depending on the ring's wear and tear. This less expensive version of the ever-trendy platinum is a popular option for guys.
Platinum rings are one of the best choices for a wedding band and are frequently chosen by many grooms. Platinum is an astoundingly durable and strong metal. Known for resisting fading and corrosion. Its appearance is brilliant. It is one of the whitest metals available and as such is quite rare.
Unlike white gold platinum rings do not require rhodium plating and will not lose their glow over time. These bands are almost pure metal, in most cases only mixed with less than 5% of other materials, making them hypoallergenic. As you may soon find out, platinum’s stellar benefits come with a hefty price tag.
Palladium resembles platinum in appearance but does not have platinum’s toughness (or cost!)t.
Sometimes referred to as “the poor man's platinum” palladium is less brilliant than the white sheen of platinum. Although, you won't find any plating and like platinum will develop a patina over time. Guys, this translates to less maintenance.
Palladium is more durable than platinum, but not stronger. In jewelry speak, this means more scratch resistant but still susceptible to bending.
Titanium rings are dark grey or charcoal. They are great at resisting scratches and scuffs but will develop an oxide layer over time, and may appear discolored.
A jeweler can polish your ring but as with palladium, it is near impossible to adjust the size. All the more reason to have it professionally sized.
Titanium is affordable and has been frequently selected for wedding bands in the past decade. It is considered very modern and on-trend.
Tungsten, sometimes seen as tungsten carbide, takes the trophy for strongest wedding band metal. It is extremely resistant to scratching or bending, good news for those who are tough on jewelry.
But, if enough pressure is applied the ring can shatter, hopefully you will not experience anywhere near enough pressure in daily use.
Tungsten has similar characteristics and benefits to the aforementioned metals. It is affordable, hypoallergenic, and has a nice weight. As a modern metal, it cannot be resized, only exchanged.
Sterling silver wedding bands are not common, at least for longterm rings. If you have a small budget they may be used as a “placeholder ring” until you can afford a higher quality band.
Silver, like gold, is very soft in its pure form. To cut down on its malleability they alloy silver with copper to make sterling silver.
Like white gold, the outside of the sterling silver band is plated with “fine” silver, a more pure derivation of the metal, to give it a more appealing appearance and luster. This plating is not durable and as a result, the band may become discolored or scratched.
Though not as strong or high quality, it is affordable.
When searching for a wedding band metal, remember this. Most “modern metals”, like palladium, can be difficult to have serviced. Without the proper tools and equipment, jewelers cannot easily resize or repair modern metal rings.
If you have an active lifestyle or a risky job, you may prefer a metal alternative. Silicone rings were created for safety and versatility, both for men who wanted these characteristics or those whose profession required them. These rubber rings are made to tear away if significant force is applied, preventing finger injuries or loss.
They are a great choice for those who are active, travel (silicone is less valuable), or work in an environment that is not conducive to wearing metal.
These futuristic bands are waterproof, heat resistant, and non-conductive. It would make a great daily piece of jewelry to swap out with your ceremonial ring on fancy occasions.
As of late, wooden wedding bands have become trendy for couples wanting an eco-friendly option. Wood is obviously hypoallergenic (aside from any finish) and is safe for the workplace as they do not conduct heat or electricity.
Wooden bands can be very budget-friendly, but durable they are not. Regular maintenance and special care are required for the upkeep of wooden rings. Like modern metals, these bands cannot be resized.
If you have your heart set on wooden, hardwoods such as oak or maple are more enduring options. Wood can also be inlaid in a metal band to increase its strength and durability while preserving its beautiful appearance.
There is no right or wrong when it comes to wedding band size regarding the width. Your band can be wide or thin. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages.
Wider bands have more room for inlays, stones, and engravings. They can be more durable and have a more striking appearance.
However, wider bands can be uncomfortable if they are too wide. Additionally, they can be harder to take off. Also, as more material may be used they may be more expensive.
Thinner bands can be more comfortable. They can be easier to get on and off, especially over large knuckles. These bands also might cost less (if kept simple).
However, thinner bands can be more susceptible to bending or breaking. They also leave less room for embellishment.
Finishes can change the look of a ring. They can also affect how much maintenance your wedding band requires so choose wisely.
Polished is the most popular finish for most jewelry. The surface is shiny, bright, and reflective. Although brilliant in appearance, they show scratches very easily.
Matte is also known as brushed or satin. The surface is not shiny but appears softly textured. Satin finishes are usually smooth to the touch while brushed feel textured. These finishes are great at hiding scratches and are popular choices for grooms.
Sandblasted is matte on the next level. They appear grainy and textured. They also feel very coarse and won’t show scratches, unless they are extremely deep.
Also known as comfort fit, these rings are curved on the outside and ever so slightly on the inside. The ring hugs the finger and edges are less likely to dig into the skin or get caught on clothing or other objects.
A flat band is flat on all sides. It is very geometric and modern looking. However, this ring is more prone to pulling on your finger and catching on objects.
The flat court is a happy medium between a flat band and a court band. The outside appearance is flat, but the inside is curved, hugging your finger. This is a comfortable compromise for those who like the trendy look of the flat but are not regular ring wearers.
A D-shaped band was once the favored style. It features a flat inside and a curved outside. This band is similar to the comfort fit but offers a very pronounced curvature on the external surface.
Just like width, the thickness of your band is up to you. Some bands need to be thicker to have the shape or fit you want (like a court or comfort fit). Thick bands are durable but can be uncomfortable. If they come too high off the finger they can get caught on objects and become a pain.
Thinner bands may be more susceptible to wear and tear. However, they can cost less and be more pleasant to wear. A 1.5mm thickness is a good minimum for guys wedding bands.
What is your style? Are you straightforward and no-nonsense or do you enjoy a bit of flair? Do you prefer simple and classic or are you keen on modern and trendy styles?
Your wedding band should jive with your taste. After all, it will be the one piece of jewelry that you will wear more frequently than any other. Most individuals wear their wedding rings daily for years on end.
Plain bands are a timeless wedding band style for men. They go with every outfit and every occasion. In most cases, you do not have to be concerned with damaging them and can wear them daily.
On the other end of the spectrum are detailed bands with a bit more flash. These wedding rings can have engravings, inlays, or include gems or stones. The level of detail and variety of materials you can include are nearly limitless.
To find your perfect band, there is a checklist. It has things to consider and choices you should weigh, preferably with the help of your partner. Getting married is a pretty big step, choosing your life-long symbol of love in the form of jewelry is a big decision.
First, evaluate your lifestyle. This will help you decide what kind of material your wedding band should be made of. While you may love the look of yellow gold or the eco-friendliness of wood, these may not be wise choices for you.
If you have an active lifestyle, you may want a more durable ring, such as platinum or titanium. If you travel frequently or spend a lot of time outdoors, you may want a ring that won’t be devastating if lost. Silicone is a good choice here.
Silicone is an equally good choice if your job requires it, such as for medical staff or electricians. Sometimes your ring preference may not match up with your lifestyle, in this case, you may want to consider having two rings. You could have a dressy ring and an active ring.
Once you have narrowed down the characteristics your ring must possess (no conducive, durable, etc) you can decide on the color and style. Some men prefer stylish and flashy bands. They may appreciate the shine of platinum or the gleam of yellow gold.
Others may want a subdued band that matches with nearly anything. Like a brushed titanium band that is understated and modern.
Metal alternatives like silicone and wood are considered trendy and new. You can get pretty wild with silicone ring colors and patterns. Similarly, wood inlays can be very detailed and Avante-Garde. Either choice is perfect for the free-spirited trendsetter.
Speaking of inlay, what you choose to add to your ring may also epitomize your style. Do you want diamonds or gemstones? Engravings or designs? Inlays and patterns? The options are nearly endless.
As much as you may want to make your ring all about your taste, speak with your partner first. Your partner may be intent on matching rings. Or, they may want to opt only for a silicone ring because they are concerned with your lifestyle and the ring's durability.
You are getting married after all, and therefore your partner should have a little bit of a say in this momentous decision.
Check Your BudgetFinally, run the numbers and figure out how much you can spend on a wedding band. Sometimes our tastes and jewelry aspirations don’t always match up with how much we can afford.
It may be a scenario in which you can save up for a wedding band. Or, you may have the ability to purchase the wedding band of your dreams. Odds are, you will devote a larger portion of the budget to your partner's ring and you will have to work with what is left.
Some people like to start with the budget, then decide on their materials and design. However, it doesn’t hurt to browse the entire selection first and figure out what you truly like. Then, you can decide if you want to spend the full amount upfront or save up for the purchase.
Mulling over all of these factors should hopefully make the decision easier and lead you to your perfect wedding band.
Once the ring is on your finger, your job isn’t over. Like a marriage, your wedding band will probably require maintenance. It doesn’t have to be anything too complicated but regular care can extend the life and improve the appearance of your ring.
Finding the ideal wedding band doesn’t have to be difficult. It boils down to three things: What do you like? What does your partner like? What can you afford?
It can be helpful to consider the metals, the design, and any additional elements but ultimately it should be a piece of jewelry that you are happy and comfortable wearing every day.
What Ring Metal is Most Durable? ( Titanium or Tungsten )
]]>A pre-engagement ring can sometimes be misnamed as a promise ring or a commitment ring. They are different from engagement rings and purity rings, and overall seem to be less popular than the former. But their lack of popularity may stem from confusion about what a pre-engagement ring is and when it should be given.
A pre-engagement ring is a ring given to your significant other, before the engagement ring. It doesn’t take the place of the engagement ring but is a precursor. They can be given for a handful of reasons including waiting until you are financially able to purchase an engagement ring or just waiting until the right “time” to become engaged.
Regardless of your reasoning, these rings symbolize your intention to become engaged. Or at least stay committed to your significant other. Let’s take a deeper dive into the who, what, when, and why of a pre-engagement ring.
A pre-engagement ring is a ring given prior to the engagement ring. It doesn’t take the place of an engagement ring. The typical purpose of a pre-engagement ring is to signify to your significant other, and society, that you intend to marry them in the future.
Pre-engagement rings can look very similar to engagement rings. Their appearance will often depend on your betrothed’s personality and your finances.
A singular diamond solitaire on a band is a popular choice. Some couples also navigate towards a band with small inset diamonds. Alternatively, others may want to save the diamonds for the engagement ring and wedding band and choose to use other precious stones.
Bold or demure, flashy, or simple, the ring should reflect both you and your significant other personality and style.
If a pre-engagement ring looks like an engagement ring and signifies the same thing, it begs the question why not just give an engagement ring.
There may be a few different reasons. Some couples may not want to be engaged, yet. They may not be financially or emotionally ready to be engaged. Additionally, they might not be ready to be married and don’t want to have a long engagement. Therefore, to keep the engagement period short or at an acceptable time, but still show their commitment, they opt for a pre-engagement ring.
Alternatively, a couple may want an engagement ring that is nicer than they can currently afford. It is not uncommon for some to save up for a ring, and hold off purchasing one until they have the funds. In the meantime, their significant other may want something to symbolize their committed relationship. Hence, the pre-engagement ring.
There are a few different types of rings that may be given prior to an engagement ring. Though the names can sometimes be used interchangeably, they technically have different purposes behind being given.
A promise ring is a symbol of a couple's love for one another. Usually exchanged between two people who are young, these rings can be a precursor to a pre-engagement ring. They can be worn on nearly any finger and made of almost any material you can think of.
These rings date back to the 13th century when girls were given posy rings by their most committed suitors. Posy rings were eventually replaced with acrostic rings that used gemstones in the 18th century.
Now, as with then, these rings do not necessarily signify an impending engagement. Instead, they are used to show that two people are in a committed relationship. In modern times, they are most commonly used by those in a long-distance relationship.
A purity ring is something entirely different. These rings signify that the wearer is staying pure until marriage, or abstaining until marriage. They are generally worn by those of varying faiths as they are typically religious.
A purity ring can look like any other ring from the outside. On the inside though, they may have an engraving about living a pure life, or a phrase, such as “true love waits”. Unlike a promise ring, they are commonly worn on a person’s left ring finger. This is the same finger on which a wedding band is worn, as the purity ring signifies that you are waiting until marriage.
In most cases, a purity ring is not given by someone to their significant other. Instead, they can be purchased by the wearer directly or even by a family member. Similar to a promise ring they do signify a commitment, but it is not to a relationship. It is a commitment to staying pure, mind, body, and heart until the ring is removed and replaced by a wedding band.
The final ring that is sometimes confused with a pre-engagement ring is a commitment ring. These rings are a symbol of two people's commitment to one another. However, they don’t always signify that engagement or marriage is in their future.
They are usually exchanged by two older people, or adults, and represent a pledge to another person as an adult. This is unlike a promise ring used with young couples. Commonly, these rings can be used by adult couples who never intend to get married but remain committed to one another and sharing their lives.
These rings may be just as extravagant as a wedding ring, as they can function as a pseudo-wedding ring. Alternatively, they can be very simple. It is ultimately up to the wearer.
Though a pre-engagement ring might be easily confused for one of these other rings, pre-engagement rings have their own specific set of reasons for being used.
Picking out a pre-engagement ring is very similar to shopping for any other jewelry item. There is a myriad of styles, sizes, metals, stones, designs, and more. Overall, your ring choice should reflect the wearer's personal style and be both comfortable and enjoyable to wear.
First, decide if you want your ring to be simple or grand, or somewhere in between. As mentioned, pre-engagement rings can resemble actual engagement rings. Do you want a diamond stunner? Or an understated elegant band? Narrowing down what style of ring you would like will help immensely.
There are so many types of metal available. Each has specific advantages and disadvantages. The first is yellow gold. Yellow gold is the most traditional and common metal used for rings. Usually, you won’t want to purchase one-hundred percent gold, as these would be quite soft and damage easily, not to mention very expensive. Typically other metals are added to the gold for stability and then the metal is then referred to as an alloy.
How much gold and the quality of the gold are referred to in karats (with a “K”, carats with a “C” refers to diamond purity). You can find 14kt gold, 18kt gold, and so on. An 18kt gold ring is only 75% gold, and a 24kt gold ring is considered “pure gold”.
Yellow gold tends to be the most pricey of the different shades of gold. A pre-engagement ring of this style can pair very well with your future engagement ring and/or wedding band.
Another shade choice is rose gold, a warmer reddish/pink color. Gold combined with copper and occasionally small amounts of silver results in a beautifully champagne-colored ring. The karat value is still determined by the amount of gold in the band. But, it is not considered a naturally occurring rare metal. This can make it more affordable than yellow gold and also more durable. Rose gold is a stylish and modern option.
Finally, white gold. It is also an alloy made of gold and “white” metals like nickel or silver combined with a rhodium plating. The plating finish gives the ring a look similar to platinum. This is a less expensive option compared to platinum. And though the ring will be more durable than yellow gold, the plating may still require a regular refinishing. Just something to keep in mind.
Next is platinum. Platinum rings are one of the best choices for a wedding band but may be a bit pricey for a pre-engagement ring. Platinum is strong, anti-fading, and corrosion-resistant. Considered one of the whitest metals, its appearance is very prized.
These glowing rings hold up well over time, making them very accommodating to a future wedding set. Another big bonus is that they are hypoallergenic, excellent for passing along to future family members.
Moving on to palladium, a cheaper metal that resembles platinum. Sometimes even referred to as “the poor man's platinum”. It won’t be as lustrous but still plenty strong. It is quite scratch-resistant, making it a long-lasting ring.
Titanium rings are dark grey or charcoal and a popular choice for men’s rings; a great choice if you are doing couples pre-engagement rings. It resists scratches and scuffs but can develop an oxide layer over time that can be polished out. Titanium is an affordable choice but due to its qualities don’t expect to get it resized or altered.
Moving on to tungsten or tungsten carbide, the most durable of metals for rings. These rings won’t scratch or scuff but are prone to shattering under extreme pressure. Still, they are affordable, hypoallergenic, and come in appealing shades.
Finally, sterling silver is typically used in “placeholder rings”. Or a pre-engagement ring until your budget matches your ring aspirations. Silver is added to copper to make a sterling silver ring more durable.
Like white gold, the outside of the ring is treated with “fine” silver, to create the shiny silver luster. Though not a long-lasting ring, due to discoloration and scuffing, sterling silver is very affordable and comes in many styles.
As you can see, there are various prices, shades, and strengths of metals. To choose the right one, think about your budget, your style, and your daily lifestyle.
On the other hand, you could choose a non-metal option. A non-metal option is rather uncommon for a pre-engagement ring, but it is ultimately your choice.
Silicone is ideal for individuals who are very active or have workplace considerations. Silicone rings were created for safety and versatility. Made of rubber, they can easily tear away, preventing a variety of finger injuries.
They are extremely affordable and come in all kinds of colors and designs. They are waterproof, heat resistant, and non-conductive.
Wood has become trendy for couples wanting an eco-friendly option. They are hypoallergenic, if unfinished, and are safe for the workplace as they don’t conduct heat or electricity. Even though they are affordable, they are not the most durable.
Still, oak or maple are enduring options because they are hardwoods. For increased strength, wood can also be inlaid in metal.
After choosing the metal, decide if you would like any gems or precious stones on your ring. Traditionally, pre-engagement rings, promise rings, and the like featured the birthstones of the couple. Today you can choose to have a simple band, a variety of different gems, or even just a solitaire.
Decided you would like stones? Which ones will you choose? Some pre-engagement rings have a diamond. This is because these rings signify an impending engagement, and therefore mirror an engagement ring but on a smaller scale.
Alternatively, you could choose a gem, a stone, or even a pearl. The opportunities are endless. It is all about your personal tastes and style.
If you do decide on a gem, particularly a diamond, you should have a cut in mind. The cut refers to the shape of the diamond. Each cut will likely have a different price point. Round cuts are very popular, and usually the most costly. Other more obscure shapes, like pear, tend to cost less.

If size matters, know how your budget compares to how many carats you would like. Carats refer to the weight of the diamond (or its size). Many pre-engagement rings, if they do have a diamond, will have one that is very small in size. After all, this is a precursor to the engagement ring.
When thinking about diamonds and size and shape, don’t forget to consider how this ring will be worn in the future. You may be able to add it to your wedding set if you choose wisely.
Also, remember carats aren’t everything. Quantity doesn’t always mean quality. Be sure to check out the clarity and brilliance of the stone compared to the carats.
Pre-engagement rings can lend themselves well to engravings. You can choose to engrave both your names, a special phrase, or even a date.
A final consideration is, are you purchasing one ring or a set? Though it is very common for only one person in the relationship to be presented with a ring, some couples prefer to each wear a ring. This way both people can outwardly show their commitment to the relationship.
If you are purchasing a set, you will probably want your rings to match or coordinate in some aspect.
There are no hard and fast rules concerning pre-engagement rings. However, there are a few guidelines that are generally adhered to.
When to give a pre-engagement ring.
A pre-engagement ring signifies that an engagement is in the future. If you don’t intend to become engaged or married, then you may want to consider another type of ring. Such as a promise ring or a commitment ring.
How to wear it.
A pre-engagement ring precedes an actual engagement ring. Guidelines state it should be worn on the ring finger or the left hand so that it can be removed and replaced when the actual engagement occurs.
Depending on the style of your ring, it can be easily confused for an actual engagement ring. This is especially true if you wear it on your left-hand ring finger. This may or may not be concerning for you.
However, some argue that if the engagement will not be happening within the next two years, then the pre-engagement ring should be worn on the ring finger of the right hand.
Unfulfilled promises.
Just like with an engagement ring, if the promise is broken, it is appropriate to return the ring to the person who gave it.
Do I need to be a certain age?
There are no age specifications regarding a pre-engagement ring. Usually, a pre-engagement ring is given between two people who are young adults or older. They have been in a committed relationship and plan to get married. Promise rings are typically for younger individuals, sometimes even high school sweethearts.
Still, there are no specific rules concerning age. If you feel in your heart that the time is right, and your partner agrees, then go for it!
Ultimately, the ring should symbolize your unique love and commitment to one another. It should be a reflection of your relationship. As such, it should be special to you two. Carats, cut, and style don’t matter as long as you both love it.

Is an Engagement Ring a Promise Ring?
Should Engagement Rings Be Engraved?
]]>
The world of rings is vast. A fact you will quickly come to realize if you ever go jewelry shopping for a significant other. There are so many designs, metals, stones, and styles to choose from. In addition, different types of rings may be designed specifically for different purposes.
It can be hard to decipher which ring is meant for what occasion. This is especially true when it comes to promise rings and engagement rings. Though an engagement ring signifies a promise, it is not the same as a promise ring.
You will likely end up with a disappointed partner if you present them with a promise ring in place of an engagement ring. If you purchase an engagement ring instead of a promise ring you will likely exceed your budget. Thankfully, we have created this handy guide so you can make a wise and informed choice.
A promise ring is not an engagement ring, but it signifies a commitment just the same. Though the actual “promise” can be different for each couple.
Some couples may treat it as a pre-engagement ring with a promise of marriage. Others might give a promise ring when their relationship becomes exclusive, even if marriage is not yet on the table.
Ultimately, this special piece of jewelry shows some type of devotion to one another. The giver and the wearer of the promise ring both agree to this commitment.
Some individuals believe that promise rings can be dated back all the way to early Rome. Second century BC Rome to be exact.
As was common in many cultures, and still is today, a period of courtship occurred before engagement. While a couple was in courtship the lady may wear a ring to show that she was committed to her partner and her relationship.
Courtship carried on through the ages, and because of this 15th century had “Posie Rings”, the ring most similar to our modern version of a promise ring. Posy Rings were given as “lovers gifts”.
They were commonly engraved with either a romantic saying or a religious phrase. In some cases, a gemstone signifying the giver's birthstone could be added. Though Posie Rings's popularity dwindled around the 17th century the sentiment behind them carried on.
Whether you are giving a promise ring in expectation of marriage, or just to signify your exclusive relationship, the purpose is the same: commitment, devotion, and love.
The purpose of a promise ring is to show your significant other, and the world, that you are committed to the relationship and, in modern words, “taken”.
Therefore, it's important to note that promise rings aren’t just for ladies anymore. Couples' promise rings are gaining in popularity as a way for both individuals to show their love for one another.
Men can certainly wear promise rings, as did Liam Hemsworth when he and Miley Cyrus were first involved. Promise rings for guys are out there and can be quite fashionable and trendy.
Some people may wear their promise ring for religious reasons. Though this is more typical of a purity ring. However, a few individuals may wear the ring as a promise to abstain and stay “pure” until marriage.
Treating the ring as a promise to their faith instead of another person. This use of a promise ring was popularized by the Jonas Brothers in the early 2000s.
Additionally, on occasion friends may exchange promise rings. Much like the best-friends-forever necklaces or bracelets. These promise rings signify devotion to a platonic friendship.
It is much more common for couples in a romantic relationship to give and wear promise rings. Treating them as a pre-engagement ring or symbol of their exclusive coupling. For the purposes of this article, we will be looking at these types of promise rings.
Remember Posie Rings? These early versions were simply engraved bands. And, this is definitely still a promise ring option today! A promise ring can be as simple or as ornate as you would like.
The meaning behind your ring can help dictate how expensive and intricate the design is. For example, a promise ring preceding an engagement ring is likely to be a bit more costly and ornate than one given to signify a highschool couples exclusivity.
There are a variety of metals, stones, and designs to choose from. White gold, yellow gold, rose gold, titanium, palladium, and sterling silver are all possible choices. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.
When it comes to stones, some individuals prefer to choose a diamond. This may be because the diamond is the most popular stone for engagement rings and wedding bands. However, a diamond is often the most expensive.
Birthstones are another common choice. A romantic option is using both members of the couple’s birthstones. A sweet reminder of your commitment to one another.
January’s birthstone is garnet, most commonly seen with a beautiful deep red color. However, garnets can also be found in colors including yellow, orange, and green.
Derived from the Latin word “Garanatus” which literally means “seedlike”, garnets are thought to resemble pomegranate seeds.
These stones symbolize peace, prosperity, and good health and would make a stunning addition to any ring.
A sparkling variation of quartz, amethyst belongs to February. Available in a pale lavender to deep eggplant, there is a range of purple hues to choose from. The best part is that it is not rare and quite affordable.
Amethyst is most associated with a clear and sound mind, and intelligence. Once a cherished gemstone, coveted as much as diamonds, amethysts are now frequently used in jewelry.
March has two birthstones, aquamarine, and bloodstone. Aquamarine is a stunning turquoise while Bloodstone is a dark green stone with red-colored inclusions.
Aquamarine can be somewhat hard to find but comes in a variety of sizes and cuts. Its hue can range from bluish-green to pale-blue. Its gorgeous sea-like color is associated with tranquility, never-ending unity, and level-headedness.
Bloodstone is a rich green with red flecks. It is found in other rocks or found as pebbles in rivers and streams. This earthy and ancient stone is still chosen as a lucky charm today.
April's birthstone is the diamond. Diamonds are commonly used for engagement rings and wedding bands. Fittingly so because eternal love has long been associated with this stone.
Lush green emerald stones are the birthstone of May. These stones are quite costly, and the price rises depending on the color. The darker the green, especially those with a blue hue, the rarer the stone.
A perfect promise ring addition the emerald represents loyalty.
June has three birthstones, pearl, alexandrite, and moonstone. Pearls are actually the only gemstone produced by living creatures. Natural pearls are creamy white while cultured pearls can be purple, yellow, brown, blue, green, or black.
Alexandrite is a relatively recent discovery. It changes color in the light, appearing as blue-green in one light and reddish-purple in another.
Moonstone comes in many colors, giving you options. But each one has a moon-like opalescence. Any one of these gorgeous stones would look nice in a promise ring.
July’s birthstone is the ruby, ranging from pale pink to deep maroon. Perfect for a promise ring, rubies are also symbolic of love and passion.
Natural rubies are quite rare and very expensive, so you may want to opt for man-made synthetic stones.
Peridot is the birthstone most commonly associated with August, though sardonyx is the traditional birthstone. Sardonyx is a layered stone of orangish-red and whites, though hues can range from a yellowish-red to a brownish-red.
In contrast, Peridot is a fresh, light green in color. Peridot used to only be mined in one location worldwide, but when Kashmir Peridot was discovered the stone became much more affordable.
Blazing sapphires, the stone of September, occurs in nearly every color, except red, though the royal blue hue is most popular. There are many famous sapphires such as the Star of Adam and the Star of Bombay. Celebrities also favor them, such as for Princess Diana’s engagement ring in the early 1980s.
Naturally occurring sapphires are highly sought after and pricey, but synthetic ones are affordable and available.
October is yet another month with two birthstones, opal, and tourmaline. Opals can be either black or white, but both colors have a rainbow-like effect thanks to their silica inclusions.
Tourmaline can be found in nearly every shade of the rainbow, even black. Both tourmaline and opal are dazzling, colorful, and look gorgeous on a ring.
Citrine and topaz are the birthstones of November. Citrine can be as dark as brownish-orange or as light as a pale yellow. Topaz has very similar hues. It can be yellow in color, but this is not its pure form. Pure topaz is colorless, precious topaz is a brownish-amber.
Pure topaz may also be synthetically altered to appear blue. Because of this inexpensive process, blue-tinted topaz is one of the least pricey gems on the market.
Finally, Tanzanite, Zircon, and Turquoise, three blue stones, are the birthstones of December.
Tanzanite is blueish-purple but can have a naturally occurring brown tint. Zircon is most common in a reddish-brown hue, but blue is the most prized. Smoky Zircon, a dusky grey, used to be the most used form of the stone.
Turquoise can vary in color from a greenish-blue to a bright cerulean. It can have many dark-colored streaks or be a nearly solid blue. Any one of these stones can look very appealing on a promise ring.
When looking for a promise ring, you will probably first want to determine your budget. Are you looking for a pre-engagement ring with rare metals and costly diamonds? Or perhaps something a little more reserved? Knowing how much you want to spend will go a long way in helping the jeweler know which materials and settings to offer.
Once you have your budget nailed down, find a reputable jeweler (or two). You may want to shop around, so it is best to locate a few places for browsing in your area.
Next, choose the materials. First, you will want to decide on the metal used for the band and the setting. Remember, there are lots of different metals out there. They vary in appearance, durability, and most importantly cost.
Then, it is time to decide if you would like to incorporate gemstones. Diamonds are always popular, but birthstones make great additions as well!
If you do want to incorporate stones into your design, you will need to figure out their placement and the settings. Traditionally, promise rings had some sort of heart feature to symbolize love.
Nowadays, promise rings can have almost any design you choose. Solitaires are classic and elegant. Engraved bands are thoughtful and romantic. Multi-stone rings can be alluring and meaningful. Such is the case with a three-stone diamond ring, signifying your love and devotion past, present, and future.
Finally, make sure your significant other is happy with the ring. While you may not want to disclose all of the details, there are a few things you should run by your partner.
First, is that the ring is not an engagement ring. It would be very disheartening for the other person to believe they are being proposed to when that is not the case.
Second, you want to make sure that it matches their taste and style. A promise ring is a ring that should be worn daily and rarely taken off. For these reasons you want to be sure the ring is something that they will enjoy wearing 24/7.
Once you have all of the details in place you can select the perfect ring!
Now that you have the ring, there are a few guidelines you should follow.
When Should I Give a Promise Ring?
Each couple is different and therefore it is up to them as to when they want to exchange promise rings. You shouldn’t expect a promise ring at a specific stage of your relationship. After all, some couples never use them at all.
When you are considering a promise ring, you should discuss it as a couple. It is important to clarify your reasons behind giving the ring and what exactly the “promise” signifies. This can also help clear up any confusion regarding an engagement.
Which takes us to the next point of etiquette,
How To Give a Promise Ring
Once you have talked about your intentions, your partner should expect a promise ring to be given. It is important to keep the presentation special, but not as elaborate as a true marriage proposal.
There is no need to get down on one knee, arrange for an audience, or plan a big event. Instead, keep it simple, sweet, and heartfelt.
On What Finger Should You Wear Your Ring?
A promise ring given in friendship should not be worn on either of the ring fingers.
A promise ring worn for chastity should be worn on the left-hand ring finger with the idea that it will only be removed in order to be replaced by a wedding ring.
If you are giving a promise ring for romantic purposes, you have a few options. Generally, if you are planning on getting engaged in two years or less it is acceptable to wear the ring on your left-hand ring finger.
If you do not plan to get engaged in the near future, you may want to wear the ring on your right-hand ring finger. Some individuals choose to wear the ring on either of the middle fingers so as not to cause confusion about whether or not it is an actual engagement ring.
When To Take a Promise Ring Off
When a promise is either fulfilled or broken, you can stop wearing your promise ring. If you do become engaged the promise ring is commonly replaced by the engagement ring.
If the relationship changes or ends, then you can discontinue wearing the ring. In some cases, it may be appropriate to return the ring to the “giver”.
Even if your promise ring is traded for an engagement ring or wedding ring, some people still enjoy wearing it. This is perfectly acceptable as it is likely a beautiful and meaningful piece of jewelry!
Promise ring etiquette is certainly more relaxed than engagement ring etiquette. However, just because it is casual does not mean you don’t need to clarify your intentions. Having an open and honest conversation about all of the aspects of a promise ring is generally the best way to go.
Promise rings are a beautiful way to show commitment. Whether that be to a romantic relationship, a friendship, or even a religious view. Today, promise rings aren’t just for young couples, and they aren’t for women only either!
These rings say I am devoted, and they can be worn by nearly anyone of any age.

Can the Groom See His Ring Before the Wedding?

Arguably one of the most important gifts that you will give your romantic partner in your life is an engagement ring.
The ring is symbolic of your everlasting love and commitment, so you want it to be special, something that they will cherish until death do you part.
Though the ring will be special on its own, many people wonder whether or not they should engrave the engagement ring with a message.
The answer is , it is up to you. Engraving done right will not damage an engagement ring and can add even more sentiment to a ring. The trend is to engrave wedding bands or engagement rings
In this article, we will go over the pros and cons of engraving an engagement ring so you can make the best decision for your relationship. Stick around and give the love of your life a gift that they will never forget!
What is an ring engraving?
Engravings are simply messages etched into the surface of metal. In most cases, jewelry is engraved, though other gifts can be as well. Any message that you want to engrave in a ring must fit the limited amount of space on the band, so you will need to keep yours short and sweet.
How does it work?
The process of engraving a ring can be done in three main ways: by hand, by the use of pantograph systems, and by computer. Each has its own benefits and possible downsides. Computer engraving is widely regarded as the most precise method.
Lasers and diamond heads are frequently used for computer engravings because they are precise and sharp enough to make a proper cut more quickly than other methods.
To learn more about engraving methods, read “What is the History of Jewelry Engraving?”
For the most part, engraving a ring does not damage the metal. It depends on the method used, hand engraving being the riskiest unless you only go to a highly experienced master engraver. Even then, perfection is not guaranteed.
There is a smaller risk of error when you have the engagement ring engraved by a machine that is computer operated. Each movement is carefully calculated with both aesthetic and jewelry preservation in mind.
Getting your engagement ring engraved is a personal decision; it is crucial that you know all of the potential pros and cons before you take the first step to have that intimate message etched on the ring forever.
ProsCons
Fortunately, the cons of this list can be remedied! The decision is still yours; however, you likely will not have to worry about the downsides once you see the solutions offered. Let’s talk about that.
You may not be a master wordsmith, and that’s okay. Not everyone can be! Luckily for you, there are many basic ideas and lists to get your creative juices flowing and perhaps help you find the perfect message for the ring that you give to your partner.
Your Initials
Perhaps one of the most classic favorites when it comes to engraving a ring is a couple’s initials. It’s simple but timeless and elegant. This identifies not only who the ring belongs to, but that you belong to each other forever.
Important Dates
The date that you have engraved on the engagement ring can be of significance for several occasions:
These are just a few examples of engraved dates that will make the ring special and unique.
Nicknames
Every couple has pet names that they give to each other (i.e. darling, sweetie, dear, love, pookie, etc.) Whatever your partner’s is, have that engraved alongside the one that they gave to you or a message like, “To my (nickname).”
Special Locations
Like important dates, each couple has certain locations that mean a lot to their relationship. For example:
Wherever in the world the two of you fell in love, an engraving is an important reminder.
Symbols
In some cases, you will have the option to have a symbol etched into your engagement ring. This could be a heart, an infinity symbol, a cross – whichever is easy and special to your relationship. Your love for your partner is eternal, and the ring should reflect that.
Inside Jokes/Funny Sayings
Some couples bond over a mutual sense of humor. Inside jokes bring people closer together! If that sounds like you and your honey, have a message engraved on the inside of the band that will make them smile and laugh every time they read it!
A Promise
When you give someone an engagement ring, you are making a promise to love them and care for them forever. It’s reasonable and romantic to reiterate that promise on the ring itself. For example, you could say:
Whatever you promise, have it permanently etched into the jewelry that they will be sure to keep forever. You can never go wrong with this idea!

You still need a reputable place to get your ring engraved to avoid any mishaps or potential damage to the jewelry. There are several places to choose from.
Local Jewelers
Your local jeweler may offer an engraving service which will likely be fairly affordable. Make sure that you do some research before you go. Check online reviews and photos. See if the store has prices listed on its website. Call ahead and have any questions answered. If something doesn’t seem right or the reviews are less than stellar, it is always safer to move on to another option.
Online
If you plan to buy the ring online, the place that you order from may also offer an engraving service. Again, always check reviews, photos, and prices before buying. If there are no reviews or too many reviews all with five-star ratings and similar messages, they are not likely a reputable business.
Unfortunately, some online jewelers fake reviews on their site to lure in more customers. Be sure to avoid anything that looks suspicious!
You can trust Think Engraved with all of your engraving needs, and there are many reputable sellers on Etsy who offer engraving services as well.
The Etsy sellers below have a variety of engagement rings for sale with beautiful engraving options:

A sentiment that will stand the test of time
A custom engraving on your ring can show your significant other just how much you care. Whether it be a quote from a beloved author, a meaningful movie quote, or even their favorite song lyrics, a small inscription can make a huge difference.
There are plenty of quotes to choose from, but engravings often have word limits. Your quote will need to be short and sweet. Choose the right one and it will perfectly convey the depth of your feelings, in not so many words…

Engraving a date that was significant to you and your partner is another popular choice. It can be the date you first met, your wedding date, or even the birth of your children. If you would like a small and simple inscription, engraving a date is the way to go.
As you can see, there are many, many quotes to choose from. But no matter which engraving you choose, it should be meaningful to you and your significant other. Why would you want to engrave a ring? They already are a symbol of your love and commitment to one another. However, an engraving can make the ring so much more special for a few reasons.
Personalization. Putting an engraving on a wedding ring makes it that much more personal. You can choose a quote, saying, or phrase that means something significant to you and your loved one. An engraving is an awesome personal touch that will make the ring unique.
A Private Secret. Engravings are typically on the inside of the band. This means that it is like a secret message between you and your lover, something for just the two of you.
Special Dates. If you chose to put a date on your engraving it can help commemorate personal and cherished events.
With so many choices available for engravings, you may wonder what other couples use as inscriptions. The top five engraving categories are:
Ring engraving is a specialized process completed by skilled jewelers and companies. While trusting someone to carve into your precious ring may seem nerve-wracking, engravers take special care to keep your ring just as beautiful as the day it was purchased.
Still, you should always do your research and make sure your engraver or jeweler has both the experience and tools necessary.
Not all jewelry shops are skilled in engraving, you may want to use an outside company. Sometimes, your engraving can be done on the spot, but typically a ring must be sent away for engraving and that can take a few days to weeks. At most, it may take a month.
If you are hoping to have your wedding bands engraved prior to the big day, start looking for an engraver early.
You will want to make sure the engraving process matches up with your wedding timeline. However, often settling on a quote can take much longer than the actual engraving process.
In a nutshell, this is what basic engraving entails.
To help ensure there are no mistakes, it is best to type out your chosen quote in your desired font and present it to the engraver. Engraving can be done one of two ways, by machine or by hand. Some places may even be able to laser engrave a microscopic message.
Some of these laser engraved images or quotes can be placed on the actual stone of your ring. They can be seen with a simple magnifying glass. This unique type of engraving is like a special secret message between you and your partner and is so sweet.
Engraving by hand may take longer and even though engravers are very skilled, this method may be more prone to errors. Engraving by machine is commonly faster and more accurate. The cost of an engraving will vary by technique and company.
Ring engraving is a special and thoughtful way to show customize your rings. It makes your jewelry entirely unique and so much more meaningful. Hopefully, you were inspired by these endearing love quotes and were able to settle on the perfect engraving.
When you invest in a ring, you want to be sure that it can stand up to the strain of your everyday activities. The last thing you want is to scratch the band; it’s unsightly and can decrease the overall longevity of your jewelry.
Fortunately, there are many options on the market made of scratch-resistant metals. These metals offer varying degrees of protection, so it is important to know which is the most durable when it comes to scratches.
The most scratch-resistant metal for rings is tungsten. While it may break under pressure, it is still more durable overall than any other ring metal that you can buy. You can wear tungsten rings to work, out on the town, at home – you don’t need to take it off unless your job requires you to use a lot of force with your hands.
Today, we are going to compare five ring metals – gold, silver, stainless steel, titanium, and tungsten – to help you make the best decision in the ring buying process.
Gold rings are often chosen because gold has been a status symbol throughout history. This jewelry can be made in several colors, and gold ring bands are undeniably elegant. However, physical appearance is not the only thing to consider when buying a ring.
Gold is very soft. On the Mohs Scale of Hardness, it rates the same as a fingernail, a 2.5 out of 10. It is not very scratch resistant, and it is also prone to warping if put under pressure.
This metal is the least scratch resistant on the list. If you do plan to buy a gold ring and want to avoid scratching the band as much as possible, only wear it when you will not be doing any manual labor or touching anything with hard edges.
Pros
Cons
Next on the scratch-resistance list is silver. Silver ring bands have been wildly popular for a long time due to their shine and relative affordability. Silver rings are the least expensive precious metal. Affordability is a vital factor while on a tight budget, but you are better off investing in a ring made with more durable materials.
On the Mohs Scale of Hardness, silver rates only slightly higher than gold at a 3 out of 10. It is prone to scratching and warping as well.
Silver rings are beautiful, but they should be reserved for date nights and relaxing to minimize the risk of scratching and denting.
Pros
Cons
Some people may be surprised to find that stainless steel can be used to make jewelry and not just cookware or appliances. In recent years, stainless steel rings have increased substantially in popularity due to their combined durability and beauty.
Stainless steel rates at a 5 out of 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, making it much tougher to scratch, dent, or warp than silver and gold. While it isn’t recommended that you wear your ring to work manual labor jobs without some protection, you can feel comfortable leaving it on your finger for most everyday activities.
Pros
Cons
Platinum is elegant and shiny, but it comes with a high price tag. If you are looking for a more affordable alternative to this metal, titanium is a great dupe. Titanium rings are actually more durable than platinum rings as well.
On the Mohs Scale of Hardness, platinum rates a 4 out of 10 while titanium rates at a solid 6. What it lacks in the whiteness of platinum, it makes up for in durability and specifically scratch-resistance. Wearing a titanium ring to work is no problem in most cases and is fine to wear out and at home as well.
Pros
Cons
The one metal that stands head and shoulder above the rest on this list is tungsten. It combines the best properties of other rings in physical appearance while being more durable than any of the former options.
On the Mohs Scale of Hardness, tungsten rates a 9 out of 10. The only thing harder than this metal is a diamond.
Tungsten rings come in several colors and styles; you have a ton of variety on the market, and the best part is that this metal is very affordable. You get style, comfort, and scratch-resistance without emptying your wallet.
Pros
Cons
The most scratch-resistant metal for rings is tungsten. While it may break under pressure, it is still more durable overall than any other ring metal that you can buy. You can wear tungsten rings to work, out on the town, at home – you don’t need to take it off unless your job requires you to use a lot of force with your hands.
Now you know which metal is the most scratch-resistant for rings, but you may be wondering where to find these rings. Below are some examples to help you start your search for the perfect fit!
If you are looking for the most scratch-resistant ring available, one made of tungsten is the best choice for you.
What you want from your ring depends on your situation and preference, but buying something durable is important for the longevity of your jewelry. It never hurts to be safe!

]]>Giving your partner the gift of a promise ring is a significant milestone in your relationship, and that’s why it’s important to put some thought into your choice before making a final decision.

Today, we are going to talk about what promise rings signify, what they look like, how you can customize your ring, and some examples to consider because, while you’re here, you may just find the perfect fit.
Promise rings are rings that are typically given to a romantic partner to signify readiness to commit to the relationship.
In most cases, this is the precursor to an engagement ring. You are giving your significant other a physical symbol of that promise to be exclusive and to love them.
Of course, promise rings can be a symbol of any promise you make to your loved one that you intend to keep. That’s why they’re so special! Each ring is unique to the couple.
Though it’s typically only women that get relationship milestone rings until marriage, there are plenty of men’s promise rings on the market. These rings have soared in popularity in recent years as gender roles have changed.
It is perfectly acceptable for men to wear promise rings; after all, both people in a relationship make promises to each other. Why should only one have a physical reminder of that promise?
These rings vary in price just like any other type of jewelry, but you will be happy to know that they cost significantly less than engagement or wedding rings.
Most high-quality promise rings range from $20-$150 in price, though the average is between $50-$65. You don’t have to blow your budget to show your partner how much you love them.
We have a great in-depth article on promise ring prices for you.
How Much Does a Promise Ring Cost?
Promise rings feature many unique styles that engagement and wedding rings often do not. You would typically see a large diamond with a plain band on an engagement ring – elegant, understated, and subtle.
However, promise rings are often colorful and decorative. There are several things that make promise rings easily identifiable. Let’s talk about that.
Gemstones
Gemstone promise rings are popular choices for couples who want to add a special touch to their promise rings. Gemstones, or birthstones, can symbolize the birthday of your special someone and personalize a ring. Most available gemstone options correspond to a birth month.
Gemstones are a great way to add a colorful accent to a promise ring while still maintaining its elegance.
If you are a spiritual person, there are also specifically assigned meanings to gems that date back centuries. To learn more about gemstones/birthstones and their meanings, please feel free to check out this article!
Engravings
Engraving a message to your partner on their promise ring is a surefire way to melt their heart. There are so many things that you can have engraved to personalize the ring that the possibilities are nearly limitless!
A general rule, though, is that messages must be kept under 20 characters in length, as there is a finite amount of room on the band.
The inner band of a promise ring is meant for messages, but you can have the outer band engraved with your names as well, depending on the ring that you choose. This memorializes your love for each other forever.

Promise Ring Band Shapes
Engagement rings and wedding bands are usually limited in style when it comes to the ring band, but promise rings include a wide array of styles to choose from.
Take, for example, this “locked hearts” promise ring. The center of the band features intertwined hearts that symbolize the lifelong bond you share with your partner. This is just one way in which promise rings are unique and distinguishable from others.
The most important thing to do before buying a promise ring is to figure out both yours and your partner’s ring size. So much goes into the personalization of the rings that the last thing you want is for the piece to be too tight or so loose that it slips off and gets lost.
Discovering your ring size is simpler than you might think, and there are a couple of ways to do it.
Using String
One simple way to measure your finger for your ring size is to use either a strip of paper or string. The string/paper should be 4 inches long for the most accurate measurement.
Measure an Existing Ring
If you already have a ring that fits, check the size and simply buy a promise ring in the same size.
If you can’t remember the sizing of this ring, measure the diameter of the band in millimeters and check Overstock’s conversion chart to find your size.
Have Your Finger Professionally Sized
If you are still unsure of your ring size, have your finger measured by a jeweler. They will be able to give you the most accurate measurement so you can be sure that your ring will be the perfect fit.
You might still find yourself in a sticky situation if you plan to surprise your partner with this ring, as you can’t measure their finger without arousing suspicion. In that case, you will have to be sneaky in order to be sure that their ring will fit.

You know what the average promise ring looks like now, but there are so many beautiful and unique options for both men and women that you just have to see them to understand which best reflects your partner’s personality.
Promise rings for men are made of many types of materials and are generally more rugged than women’s rings. There’s a ring out there for every type of man that he’ll want to wear everywhere.
Men who work manual labor jobs need a promise ring that can endure all manner of activities. Some metals are better suited for this situation than others, and that’s what we’re here to show you.
Many men enjoy exploring the outdoors and getting in touch with nature, and they deserve a promise ring that will reflect both your love for them and their interests. Fortunately, you have plenty of options in this category to choose from.
Some men prefer simple promise rings that don’t invite too much attention but are still wearable wherever they go. If that sounds like the special man in your life, take a look at some of the following rings.
Women have a huge selection of promise rings with delicate band work, gemstones, and unique features to choose from. You are guaranteed to find the perfect ring for your sweetheart no matter what her personal style is.
If your lovely lady leads with her heart and has so much love to give to the world, get her a promise ring that reflects that amazing quality. Promise rings that feature hearts are popular and beautiful; the woman that you love will only love you more once she sees it.
Your partner is truly unique; her style and personality stand out from the rest of the crowd, and her promise ring should fit in even if she doesn’t. These rings are sure to match her special qualities.
Some women also enjoy a more subtle ring that goes with everything and reminds them of your love without being too flashy. Though these promise rings are often hard to find in the women’s section, they do exist!
There is no definite answer to when you should gift your significant other with a promise ring.
The time is right when you are ready to commit to a long term relationship and you believe that they are, as well.
Remember: every couple is different and every couple celebrates milestones on their own timeline. Just listen to what your heart is telling you and present a promise ring when you feel that you should.
If you still need a more accurate estimate for reassurance, give your partner a promise ring when you decide that you want to marry them, but you aren’t ready for a formal engagement yet.
This should be when you two have had time to think about the future together, and it would be a great time to give a promise ring after you two have lived together for a while.
Just be sure that you go into doing this with solid intentions and that you only give someone a promise ring when you are sure that you want to move forward one day to marriage. When you know, you know.

Buying a promise ring for your sweetheart is generally considered a significant milestone in a relationship. Because this gift is so significant, you want to be sure that you are getting a quality promise ring that your special someone can cherish forever!
The cost of a promise ring varies based on the features you add for personalization, the materials the ring is made of, and the quality of these materials. However, more expensive rings are not always better. Why? That’s what we are here to discuss!
Today, we’re going to tell you how much a promise ring costs based on the features you want, why a promise ring is significant, and where you can find the perfect choice for your budget.
Typically, you can buy a decent quality promise ring for anywhere from $50-$300. This is great, because no matter your budget, there is a promise ring on the market for you!
The exact meaning of a promise ring is still unclear to many people, though they know that a promise ring is generally expected in a long term relationship.
Simply put, a promise ring is the tangible symbol of a promise that you make to your loved one. In most cases, this is a sign that you promise to love them forever. It’s the precursor to an engagement ring!
However, this does not always have to be the case. This ring can be a symbol of any promise you make that you plan to keep.
Your promise could be to always be there for your partner or to always make them laugh. The meaning behind any promise ring depends on the intention of the person giving it.
Promise rings range greatly in price based on where you go and what you want out of the ring. While engagement and wedding rings have a more concrete price range, you can get wonderful, high-quality promise rings at nearly any price point.
Typically, you can buy a decent quality promise ring for anywhere from $50-$300. This is great, because no matter your budget, there is a promise ring on the market for you!
There are quite a few factors that affect what the price of your promise ring will be, but the two main factors are what the ring is made of and what you add to personalize the piece.
All metals are not made equal, as many of you may already know. Some ring metals are less resistant to warping breaking.
Some are alloys made with nickel, which can cause allergic reactions and copper, which can turn your finger green. You can expect to pay less for rings like those.
The most popular choices for promise rings are sterling silver and white gold. White gold is the more expensive of the two options. A white gold promise ring will cost you $100+ while a decent sterling silver promise ring can start at around $50.
Platinum is the most expensive ring material, but it isn’t a very popular choice for promise rings.
Platinum is reserved mainly for engagement and wedding rings, as these should be more permanent fixtures on your sweetheart’s hand. Any platinum promise ring you may see on the market will likely start at $400+.
Of course, there are many more affordable promise ring options to choose from. The average tungsten ring starts at $60, though you can find quality tungsten rings for less! Stainless steel rings can be of high-quality for as low as $25-$30.
You can personalize a promise ring in two main ways – with birthstones and engravings.
Birthstones on a ring add a pop of color and grace, but they also make a ring unique to its wearer. Adding a birthstone or two to a promise ring or buying a ring with these stones included will cost more than buying one with a plain band.
While a plain promise ring band may cost only $40 or $50, rings with birthstones generally cost $60 or $70 and can sometimes cost more depending on where the stones were sourced or if they were created in a lab.
Engraving a message into the band of your promise ring is not usually too expensive. It may add $10-$20 to the price of the piece, but the price difference between it and a plain ring should not be drastic.
Adding a personal, heartfelt touch to the promise ring you give your partner costs more, sure, but it does not need to break the bank.
Men, too, can receive promise rings from their significant others! Promises aren’t just for women, so why should rings symbolizing these promises be?
While men can wear promise rings, theirs often differ from women’s in a few ways, and this does in many cases affect the price.
Men tend to wear rings with a plain band instead of those adorned with jewels of any kind. This means that no birthstone is necessary and thus, the price of men’s promise rings tends to be lower than women’s rings.
Instead of birthstones, men often choose to wear rings with inlays of a different material or color than the rest of the ring.
Take, for example, this stainless steel piece. The outer edges of the ring are silver, but the ring is inlaid with blue. It adds a pop of color in much the same way as a birthstone would while keeping the design simple and subtle.
Men typically have bigger fingers than women, so their promise rings will use more material. The band itself is also thicker to add a masculine touch. This will affect the price because more metal is being used to create the ring.
On average, men’s promise rings are cheaper than women’s. The lack of birthstones and the use of indelicate materials will cancel the price increase from using more metal to create them.
A man’s promise ring often costs anywhere from $20-$250 depending on who you buy from.
Women’s promise rings come in a wide variety of styles to suit the woman in your life! Each style sends a unique message to her from you with the promise you are making. Let’s go over some of these rings and give you an idea of what a woman’s promise ring should look like.
Many promise rings for women come with the option to personalize with her birthstone (and sometimes yours, if multiple stones fit.)
This single birthstone ring is made of sterling silver, a popular choice of band material for this type of jewelry. The silver delicately wraps around the stone in the center, holding it in place between two names, yours and hers. For pricing information, click on this link.
If you prefer to see both of you represented side by side on the ring, this two stone piece is perfect. Both birthstones are cut in the shape of a heart to symbolize your love. For pricing information, click on this link.
Of course, not all promise rings have to look so similar. This sapphire promise ring with a birthstone has a thinner band, and the sterling silver is plated with rhodium for a slightly tinted look. For pricing information, click on this link.
Promise rings are perfect canvases for engraved messages! The inner band can be engraved with your promise to her, and the outer band can bear your names for the world to see. Most women’s promise rings feature an engraving somewhere in or on the band.
This promise ring is elegant and simple. The band wraps around the finger and disconnects in the front, leaving two spots for an engraving! This could be the date that you first kissed, your names, a quote – whatever you desire. The only limit is the character amount. For pricing information, click on this link.
A rose gold promise ring would look lovely on her finger, especially when it features your names together on the band! This one has two spaces for name engravings as well as one on the inside for a special message. For pricing information, click on this link.
Though most engagement and wedding rings look the same, a promise ring’s band design can vary widely! There are no strong rules or traditions to adhere to when it comes to a promise ring. There are many beautiful choices that don’t follow what a traditional ring looks like.
This ring features an engraving of two hands locked into a “pinky promise” to signify that the promise you are making is sacred. It’s cute, unique, and if you two often pinky promise each other, this ring is the perfect homage to that! For pricing information, click on this link.
Oftentimes, when people speak of making promises or of getting married in the future, they liken it to “tying a knot.” This promise ring is a nod to the phrase, the thin band featuring only one knot in the front. For pricing information, click on this link.
We’ve spoken of men’s promise rings and what they typically look like, but now is the time to see the common features put together. Though men’s rings are still more limited than women’s in style, you have more than just a plain band to choose from!
The chief feature of a man’s promise ring is the engraving. This can be either on the outside or the inside, depending on who you buy yours from. You can have your names engraved, your promise to him, or nearly anything else you can think of. (If you would like to browse engraving ideas, please click on this link.)
This promise ring can be engraved with a message from your own handwriting. It adds a special touch and makes his ring completely unique. As long as there is room on the band, there’s room for what you want to say. For pricing information, click on this link.
This ring is more understated for the man who likes subtle jewelry. The message is engraved on the inner band for his eyes only, while the outside is two-toned black and silver. It’s masculine, yet still elegant. For pricing information, click on this link.
While not all men’s promise rings have any sort of inlay, some do and they add flair to the piece that may have been missing before.
For example, this ring is inlaid with wood for a rugged finish while being stylish. The black band compliments the inlay and allows the red tones in the wood to stand out; no birthstone necessary! For pricing information, click on this link.
Looking for something more unconventional for the man in your life? This promise ring is inlaid with meteorite and deer antler, which is certainly not something you see every day. The outer band is made of tungsten for extra durability, too. For pricing information, click on this link.
Promise rings can be worn on any finger on any hand – you can even wear yours on a chain around your neck if you’d like! However, the most popular choice is the fourth finger on your left hand, where an engagement or wedding ring will eventually go.
Because the original meaning behind a promise ring is, “I promise to be with you forever,” the receiver wears it on this finger as a placeholder until an engagement ring is presented.
Remember, though, that since the meaning behind the ring can be whatever you want it to be, don’t feel pressured to wear it like everyone else! What makes this ring special is that it’s unique to every couple.
Giving someone a promise ring is a serious thing. You have to be sure that you are ready to commit to this promise, and to the person you are giving the ring to.
For most couples, promise rings are given after a year or more of being together. Some choose to give promise rings when moving in together, as this is a significant milestone in the relationship.
You may be thinking to yourself, “If promise rings are usually a precursor to engagement, why not just get an engagement ring?” There are two reasons why promise rings are often given before engagement rings:
With the changing behind meanings, though, be clear if your promise is not what the rings traditionally symbolize. Be clear to them that this promise is not necessarily a precursor to a wedding.
If you two don’t want to get married but want to be together forever, for instance, a promise ring could be the perfect beginning and end to the ring milestones.
This means that you don’t have to get an engagement ring at all, as that implies a wedding to follow. This is a less common third reason why you might get a promise ring instead of an engagement ring.
Because a promise ring isn’t a binding contract, many people wonder what happens to it if a couple breaks up. While we certainly do not want to see this happen, who gets the ring is up to the couple.
Because you didn’t spend thousands of dollars on your promise ring, you may let the recipient keep it. After all, it isn’t going to be of much financial value to you, but it still holds great sentimental value to them.
In short, promise rings cost less than a down payment on a car, as opposed to engagement and wedding rings. These are a symbol of your undying love for your partner or even just a symbol of a promise to make them laugh or to be supportive! While the price point ranges based on several factors, these rings typically stay within the price range of $50-$300, though you may find high-quality options for less.
Whatever promise you are making to your loved one, be sure to make it one that they’ll never forget. Beautiful promise rings come in all styles and colors; you add the final touches to personalize it, and the person that you give yours to will cherish it forever.
]]>If you are fond of wearing jewelry, chances are high that you’ve worn a ring at least once in your life that stained your finger green. Don’t worry; this green tinge, while unsightly, is not a sign of infection.
The stain on your finger appears due to a chemical reaction between your skin/products on your skin and the copper in your ring. While harmless, most people prefer their rings not to leave a green band behind.
Having trouble with your ring turning your finger green? Stick around, because we’re going to solve your problem and save you the trouble of scrubbing your skin raw in the future.
You know that the green staining on your finger is due to a reaction between your skin and copper in your ring by now, but why does that happen? Let’s talk about that.
When copper encounters moisture, oils, or chemicals, it oxidizes. This means that a thin layer of corrosion forms and turns green over time. Prolonged exposure to any of these elements only adds to the corrosion over time and rubs off on your fingers. This is called tarnish or patina.
One good example of the oxidation of copper is the Statue of Liberty. The statue itself is made of copper and originally looked like a shiny penny. Over time, rain and air exposure caused that green layer to form. This is what happens to your ring, just on a smaller scale and easier to clean off.
Now you understand what happens and why it happens, but how do you prevent or delay this reaction from happening altogether? There are several ways to do this, and we’re going to go over each in detail. You can use the tips you learn here to keep your fingers looking perfectly natural.
Keep Your Hands Dry
The best way to prevent the reaction between your skin and your ring from happening is to keep your hands (and ring) dry as much as possible. Lotion, soaps, and water all trigger the reaction. Follow these tips to prevent green staining:
Add a Clear Coat
In a pinch, coating the inner band of your ring with clear nail polish will delay the oxidizing process. This is because the polish creates a barrier between your skin and the metal itself. You should still use caution (i.e. avoid moisture) but this green layer of corrosion should not form as long as you keep the coat maintained.
If you choose to do this, be sure to recoat the inner band when you feel it needs a touch-up.
Avoid Wearing Low-Quality Jewelry
The green staining effect on your finger from a ring often happens because the metal your jewelry is made of is of lower quality. This is not always the case, but it is the most common reason.
Avoiding green staining is easier from the start if you choose jewelry made of only high-quality materials. One of the only examples of high-quality jewelry that can still form this green layer is sterling silver. There is copper in the alloy, but most of the mix is made of pure silver.
If this advice is coming a little late for you and you already have a stained finger, don’t fret.
The stain is simple to remove and can even rub off on its own over time! However, there are a few immediate solutions that you can use to remove the sick, green hue.
Non-Acetone Nail Polish Remover
Nail polish products are much more versatile than one would think. A clear polish coats the inner band of your ring, and nail polish remover can take off a pre-existing stain. This is better used on heavy, stubborn staining; other cases can often be resolved with less drastic measures.
Here’s how you do it:
This method is not ideal if you have open wounds. Even non-acetone nail polish remover can be harsh on the skin if used too often, so do this once per week at most.
Rubbing Alcohol
Rubbing alcohol is also extremely versatile, used for everything from cleaning to medical procedures. It can be used here to remove simple stains due to copper oxidation.
Here’s how you do it:
While this can burn open wounds, it will not be quite as harmful as nail polish remover would. In either case, exercise caution when using this product. Remember, rubbing alcohol is very drying. Prolonged exposure on the skin can cause irritation and burning.
Soap and Water
Some oxidation stains on your finger from your ring will be quite easy to remove. If the staining is very light and rubs off when you touch it, then you should try washing your hands with soap and warm water.
Do this for at least 20 seconds. In many cases, this takes care of the issue; if it doesn’t, feel free to move on to the other methods!
If you can see this green or dull layer building up on your ring, it is definitely time to give your jewelry a good cleaning. Cleaning and polishing your rings will prevent staining on your fingers and help the rings last longer overall.

When you find that perfect piece of jewelry, you might never want to take it off. Whether it be a wedding ring, a gifted necklace, or an elegant bracelet, you likely will want to wear it every day.
Every jewelry metal has different properties and requires a different level of care. When it comes to sterling silver jewelry, you may already know that this metal requires you to adhere to a certain set of rules. Following the guidelines of care for sterling silver is the key to preventing tarnish and damage.
Because this jewelry is so delicate, you may be wondering, “Can I wear sterling silver every day?” Today, we’re going to answer that question and more so you can cherish your jewelry for ages to come.
Can you wear sterling silver every day? The simple answer is yes. You can (and should) wear your sterling silver as much as possible. However, the answer to your question is more complicated than that. While there are significant benefits to doing this, there are also times you should avoid wearing sterling silver.
The main benefit of wearing sterling silver every day is that it helps to prevent tarnishing.
Jewelry made of this material is prone to tarnishing. This means that over time, it develops a thin layer of corrosion that causes the jewelry to appear dull and discolored. This can happen for several reasons, but regular use combats this effect.
The natural oils in your skin will “clean” and polish the jewelry while you wear it. These oils protect the sterling silver from several of the things that speed up the tarnishing process.
The downside to wearing sterling silver every day is that certain activities you participate in can speed up the tarnishing process and damage the jewelry by scratching it. If you are going to wear your jewelry every day, you have to take special care and know when to take it off.
There are three main things that should be avoided when wearing sterling silver. These significantly speed up the tarnishing process and make proper jewelry care more inconvenient for you.
Moisture
Moisture in the air (i.e. humidity) and water can tarnish your jewelry. Although one short dip in the water will not likely cause your jewelry to immediately tarnish, it should still be avoided when possible.
If your sterling silver gets wet, be sure to wipe it down with a non-abrasive cloth and let it completely dry before wearing it again.
When handling chemicals, even those in household cleaners, be sure to store your sterling silver somewhere safely. These chemicals can corrode your jewelry quickly and may cause irreparable damage.
Unless you are in an environment with 100% pure oxygen, you can be sure that the air around you will gradually tarnish your sterling silver jewelry. You can wear your jewelry in the open air, but it should never be stored for any length of time out in the open.
Though you can wear it every day if you would like, there are certain times when your jewelry is better off being left in storage.
Taking a shower or bath is necessary, of course, but your sterling silver should be stored safely away while doing this. Your jewelry will encounter moisture and chemicals from your soap and will tarnish quickly.
When you go swimming or get in the hot tub, your jewelry will get wet and encounter harsh chemicals from chlorine. Chlorine is significantly harsher than your shampoo and will cause more damage.
Handling household cleaners while wearing your sterling silver is not ideal. These chemicals will tarnish rings and depending on what the cleaner is made of, you could cause deeper damage than surface corrosion.
You should be wearing gloves to clean anyway, as these chemicals can damage your skin anyway. While wearing gloves, you should still take off your sterling silver to avoid accidental contact with these cleaners or moisture from your hands.
Even if you use the gentlest of soaps, you are still causing a sterling silver ring to come into contact with water. It’s a common mistake that people make; it’s easy to forget that a ring is on your finger if it’s light enough, and some people think that the short duration of washing hands won’t tarnish their jewelry.
It’s not the end of the world if you accidentally wash your hands with sterling silver jewelry on, but you should dry the piece off completely with a non-abrasive cloth and take it off beforehand in the future.
In addition to tarnishing, your sterling silver jewelry is easier to scratch than jewelry made of other materials. Suffice to say, you should avoid wearing it while doing any activity that could scratch it.
Wearing a sterling silver ring can be tricky because you have to be mindful of handling other metal objects. Sterling silver is placed on the lower end of the Mohs Scale of Hardness. Although it is more durable than pure silver, it is not especially resistant to scratching. Steel, iron, titanium, and tungsten could easily scratch it. When working with kitchenware or sharp objects, you should avoid wearing your jewelry.
If you are an avid hiker or outdoorsman, your sterling silver should be left at home while enjoying some activities the great outdoors has to offer. If your jewelry bumps into rocks or other coarse material like sand, it could get scratched irreparably.
In addition to avoiding activities that may damage your ring, you must also regularly polish/clean your jewelry and store it properly. This will add to the longevity of your piece.
There are several approved methods of polishing your sterling silver jewelry. Some of the most popular include:

Is It Okay to Wear Sterling Silver in the Shower?
Do Sterling Silver or Stainless Steel Rings Turn Your Finger Green?
]]>Sterling silver is a highly desirable material for jewelry and it has only grown in popularity over time. It is durable, elegant, and beautiful – but it isn’t without flaws.
One thing that people worry about is whether or not sterling silver is okay to wear in the shower. As you may already know, some metals are prone to tarnishing when exposed to water. This can cause your jewelry to become dull and dirty.
Today, we’re going to talk about sterling silver and whether or not the effect is the same when exposed to water, particularly in the shower.
To put it simply – yes, sterling silver can tarnish if exposed to certain elements. This metal is more high-maintenance than others; you’ll have to be especially careful when going about your day with this jewelry on.
Sterling silver tarnishes because it is an alloy, meaning that the material is made up of several metals. Pure silver does not tarnish easily, but the copper in a sterling silver alloy makes it more susceptible to this reaction.
There are a few things that will cause sterling silver jewelry to tarnish, including:
Tarnish is not the end of the world. It won’t immediately destroy your jewelry beyond repair, but the effects will build up over time. It is best that you avoid wearing your sterling silver jewelry in the following situations:
To answer the question you have been waiting for, no, you should not wear sterling silver in the shower. By doing this, you expose the metal to a lot of moisture and humidity at once.
Moisture is the biggest enemy of sterling silver, and the effects will be apparent after doing so. In the shower, you also expose your jewelry to the chemicals in your body wash and hair products, which can be harmful to the metal even though it doesn’t damage your skin.
When cleaning, you expose your hands to all sorts of abrasive chemicals and moisture. Your cleaning products are tough on dirt, which is great, but they are also tough on your sterling silver jewelry.
The same principle that applies to wearing sterling silver in the shower also applies to wearing it in the pool, the beach, or the hot tub. You are exposing the metal to too much moisture and in some cases, harsh chemicals.

Caring for Your Sterling Silver ring (tips and tricks)
If you want to avoid tarnishing your sterling silver jewelry as much as possible, you can take a few simple steps to keep it looking shiny and undamaged.
If you know that you will be handling chemicals like cleaners or getting in a pool full of chlorine, take off your jewelry. Remember, your sterling silver can also tarnish when exposed to humidity. If you are enjoying a trip to the sauna, you need to pack your jewelry away first.
Even if you take off your sterling silver jewelry before getting in the shower, keep in mind that leaving it out on the counter exposes it to humidity as well.
Your sterling silver jewelry will require more care when storing it than jewelry made of materials like stainless steel would. Leaving it on your nightstand or counter isn’t enough to prevent damage or tarnishing.
When storing sterling silver, be sure to:
Though you should avoid wearing sterling silver in certain situations, you should wear it as much as you can safely do so. The natural oils from your body will protect it to some degree. Wipe the jewelry down after wearing it to keep it clean.

Can You Wear Sterling Silver Rings All the Time?
If you do tarnish your jewelry, don’t worry. It can be removed through polishing. There are several ways to go about polishing your sterling silver, all of them relatively simple. Let’s talk about that.
Don’t feel like polishing your sterling silver jewelry? That’s understandable, and you don’t have to. Oftentimes, you have the option to take your jewelry to a professional cleaner. All you have to do is drop off your piece, pay for the service and come back when it’s done. If you are lucky, you may not have to wait for a day or two.
This may be confusing because you have been advised repeatedly not to expose your sterling silver to moisture, but this method of polishing works well as long as you follow instructions carefully.
Lemon juice has been a popular cleaning agent for decades. It’s acidic enough to remove grime but gentle enough to clean most everyday objects with. Olive oil is used for this polishing method because it dilutes the acidity of the lemon and provides extra shine.
Here’s how to do it:
Before you jump into polishing your sterling silver jewelry, you must first learn how to do so safely.
You may be inclined to polish your jewelry by rubbing in small circles with your cloth or other cleaning material. Don’t do this. You could scratch the silver. Instead, rub back and forth to prevent damage.
When polishing your sterling silver, you should only use non-abrasive items and solutions. The following are approved polishing materials:
Stick to using these or take your jewelry to a professional. Many guides recommend using toothpaste to clean with, but it’s better to avoid doing so if you can. You need a specific formula and only a tiny amount. The other methods are less complicated and will save you some money.
If you are using acidic solutions like lemon juice or white vinegar, be sure to dilute them. Too much acid can corrode your sterling silver jewelry.
One of the most important things to remember is that you have to let your jewelry dry completely after polishing and before storing/wearing. If you get impatient, you’re only doing your sterling silver more harm. Prolonged exposure to moisture will tarnish your jewelry again, defeating the purpose of polishing it in the first place.
Always wipe it downThough some amount of air drying is necessary, you should still wipe your jewelry down after polishing. Again, use a non-abrasive cloth to do so. It should be at least partially dry before you lay it out to finish.
In conclusion, it is ultimately not okay to wear sterling silver in the shower. While it will not destroy your jewelry completely, it does tarnish and only causes more trouble and work for you later. If you want your jewelry to sparkle and shine, follow this advice and treat it with care.
